9 Trials, Tribulations and Lists – Discussion Starters

November 25, 2019 By admin

  1. Lists and so forth. Be honest. Did you cringe just a bit when you saw “lists” as one of the topics for this week’s lesson? Do you remember memorizing long and painful lists of various kinds in classes you took? How often in your work and home life do you come across lists that make you groan? Or that excite you with joy? Our lesson reminds us that our God is a ruler of infinite details and gives us a fair number of lists to help us keep track of the most important ones. For example, what practical value does the listing of genealogies have for us modern-day Christians?
  2. The God of history. Which of our Bible writers for this quarter, Ezra or Nehemiah, paid more attention to details? Consider Belteshazzar, the king of Babylon until his empire fell in one crash. Why the sudden fall of power? Was it because of Belteshazzar’s failure or because of the strength and power of the defeating Medo-Persian forces? Imagine seeing a huge human hand appearing in a room for celebrating, writing of the sure end of Belteshazzar. What was Daniel’s view of the event?
  3. In their cities. We see in Ezra 2 and Nehemiah 7 a list of people who came with Zerubbabel and Joshua from Babylonian captivity to Jerusalem. Was this list boring to the survivors of the years in servitude in Babylon? What was its purpose? Imagine you are coming with fellow Israelites to the city of your heritage. Then imagine what it is like when that venerable monument to God’s glory, the second temple, is not only built, but remodeled, and made to be beautiful. Why were they so successful in accomplishing all of this?
  4. Where are the priests? How easy is it to conclude that everybody came back to Jerusalem from Babylon? Why wouldn’t they all rejoice and come back? What about Levites, who served as priests in various ceremonial services? Why did they decide not to come back? Or was just it a minority of priests who did not return? What were some of the main reasons that many Israelites decided not to make the journey “back home”? What do you think would have been your choice if you’d been in that group of God’s children?
  5. Humbled before God.  Yes, God did promise to bring His children back home from captivity. Did He also promise that it would be a pleasant journey? No trials or problems? Why didn’t Ezra beg God for an escort or an armed guard to protect him on the journey? Should he have? Why do you think that Nehemiah’s choice for assuring a safe journey was dramatically different? Is it a sign of indifference or disloyalty to depend on anyone except God and His people to help us when we’re in trouble?
  6. In the Holy City. “Free at last, free at last, praise God almighty, I’m free at last.” Was that the cheer of those settling in Jerusalem and the surrounding area? Why were so many immigrants to Jerusalem eager to settle in the pleasant countryside rather than in the city? Can you blame them? What was the challenge about city life that God wanted His people to take on? Do you think that as last-day believers in the second coming, we should at least consider assuming a larger role in the highly populated areas of our countries so that we could lead more people to follow Jesus?
Amen!(0)

9: Trials, Tribulations, and Lists- Singing with Inspiration

November 25, 2019 By admin

The first word in our Sabbath School lesson title brings us our first hymn:
“The Glory Song”, Hymn 435. The second word in the title, Tribulation, is found in:
Hymn 8, “We Gather Together”, verse 4 of
Hymn 348, “The Church Has One Foundation”, Playing notes of hymns
Hymn 441, “I Saw One Weary”,
Hymn 532, “Day By Day” and
Hymn 632, “I Will Follow Thee”.

Luke 12:6, 7 (Sabbath afternoon) is shown in
Hymn 62, “How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place” where the sparrow finds her nest.

Sunday’s study of the God of History is found in
Hymn 97, “Lord of the Boundless Curves of Space”.

Sadly, many of the Levites could not be convinced to return to their homeland (Tuesday) as they did not see that “there is a land that is fairer than day, that is,
Hymn 428, “Sweet By and By”.

In Hymn 261, “The Spirit of the Lord Revealed” we seek to be Humbled Before God (Wednesday).

Ezra and Nehemiah had the people asking:
“Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah”, Hymn 538

Blessings for a Happy Sabbath singing.

2 Timothy 2:15 KJV – “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

Amen!(0)

Monday: In Their Cities

November 24, 2019 By admin

Scan over the lists in Ezra 2:1-70 and Nehemiah 7:1-73. What do you notice about them?

The repetition of Ezra 2:1-70 (the list of those who returned from the Babylonian captivity with Zerubbabel and Joshua) in Nehemiah 7:1-73 is deliberate. Again, these lists might seem boring to us, but they reveal an important point, which is that God cares about details that we might not care about.

The walls of Jerusalem were now finished, and the biblical text intentionally wants to demonstrate that the Ezra-Nehemiah generation of returnees were all contributing toward this great accomplishment, even though God alone gave them this success. The present generation built on the accomplishments of the previous one, even though the task was complicated, filled with barriers, and not completed as soon as they would have liked.

The leadership of Ezra and Nehemiah was valued, but the people also did their work. Each group engaged in different tasks performed at different times, but the result is impressive. The beginning (Ezra 2:1-70) is linked with the end (Nehemiah 7:1-73), and not only was the second temple built, but also Jerusalem was remodeled and well established.

Read Nehemiah 7:73. What does it teach us about how successful they were in their desire to do God’s will?

“The children of Israel were in their cities”.

In many ways, the whole return and rebuilding was amazing. A people who many years before had their city devastated, their temple destroyed, and their land ravaged had now returned to that same land and that same city and were rebuilding everything, even the temple. It must have seemed miraculous to them and to those around them, as well. It was all, however, according to the will and the promises of God.

What in your life right now might seem hopeless, but nevertheless, you are still trusting in the Lord to get you through?
Amen!(0)

This One Was Born There….

November 24, 2019 By admin

The leaders of the people were living in Jerusalem, the holy city. A tenth of the people from the other towns of Judah and Benjamin were chosen by sacred lots to live there, too, while the rest stayed where they were. Nehemiah 11:1 NLT

I love living in Florida, but that does not keep me from dreaming of other places. I love reading books and watching documentaries about far-away places. Sometimes late at night when my work is done or even when it’s not, I go on Google Satellite Maps and tour the world. When asked where my favorite places are I respond, “Mostly just the seven continents and all the little islands in between.” I like to go through neighborhoods in Australia and Canada and places in between on street view. It makes me feel like I am really there.

Becoming One Through His Love

What fascinates me is how far away these places are, yet we are so much alike. A few years ago I was actually in Lima, Peru ,on a mission trip. I was riding in a bus, and at a red light looked down from my window and could not help seeing a professionally dressed lady in her car with a nice wrapped gift package in the front seat. I assumed she had just left work and was on her way to a birthday party. A very similar routine to those of us in the United States, I mused to myself.  The only difference was a few thousand miles.

While Lima seemed to be a very modern and wealthy enough city, I visited other parts of Peru that reminded me I was far away from home. One night while walking with friends near our hotel in Chiclayo, we met a young girl sitting on a blanket with her little brother begging for money. We gave her several soles, and she gave us a warm beautiful smile, making us feel richer than we did while the money was still in our hands. Nearby another young nina watched, much too polite to ask, but you could  see in her eyes that she desperately needed some soles too. I went over to her and she quickly took my offering and smiled with a “gracias.” I realized while we were on the same planet, I, being a man from the United States, and the two girls begging in Peru were living in separate worlds. Reading all the encyclopedias in the world and visiting Google Maps would never give me a true picture of the world they live in, even tough we share the same moon and sun.

As I write this I can already hear you say, “William you don’t have to cross the sea to find people living in a different world than you. Just cross the railroad tracks!” True. I even read a while back that different siblings perceive their same family so differently based on age and order of birth that it is not even like growing up in the same family. I walk the campus of the school where I help, which has grades pre-k through 12. I realize each classroom is in its own little world. If you asked a pre-k student and a 12th-grader to each draw a picture of their school, you would never be able to tell that both pictures were of the same school, and it’s not just because the 12th-grader is a better artist. They are both in their own world on the same campus. So, yes, you are right. I don’t have to go far to find someone living in a different world than me.

Have you ever looked at a family member who just said something very far out to you, and wanted to ask them, “What planet are you from?” Even though they grew up with you in the same house? Chances are they may have grown up in the same home as you but  still from a different “planet” so to speak because of how they perceived the home and neighborhood around them. Today I will be talking to my sister about our childhood memories, and she will remember things I never noticed, while I was paying attention to things she never saw. Same home. Different worlds. That could explain why two siblings can both love each other very much and have many of the same values, while each being their own independent person. One moment they can both be in total agreement about an issue and then on another issue wonder what planet the other one is from.

While our worlds can be very similar in some ways but in another galaxy in other ways, it helps us understand why we can be so different and yet similar. This is why only God can judge us, because only God even knows what world we are living in.

The Lord will record, When He registers the peoples: “This one was born there.” Psalm 87:6 NKJV

And you know what? Only God knows where “there” is. In other words, God is the only one who knows what world you live in. But he knows everything about your world. He understands things our own family members have no clue about! And you know what else? He can change our worlds so fast. It’s been 13 years since my friends and I were walking the streets of Peru. That young girl sitting on a blanket begging for money may still be sitting there. Or she may be at the medical university near my home here in Florida. One day she may save my life at the hospital and then get into her Lexus and drive home. Stranger things have happened. Only God knows. Only God is our judge. Only God needs to know. For the rest of us, let’s just be kind. That’s all we need to know – just be kind.

Amen!(0)
