Getting and Giving

December 13, 2018 By admin

Dear God: Forgive me for forgetting what Christmas is about. I live in an overly commercialized country where merchants promote Christmas as a shopping bonanza. It’s all about getting new stuff—new clothes, gadgets, flat screen TVs, books and more. Lots more! I’ve grown accustomed to getting whatever I want. My house is full of furniture, electronics, clothes, wall hangings, and dishes. My closets are filled with sheets, blankets and shoes. My library is full of books from all over the world. My refrigerator is filled with food fit for a king. I don’t need anything else, except to know that my life does not consist in what I get and own.

Open my eyes to needs that I can fill; to people I can help. Teach me how to be a cheerful giver. Thank you for giving Heaven’s richest treasure to reclaim me from the grip of selfishness.

In Jesus’ name. Amen!

Rich DuBose writes from Northern California.

Your Are the Light

November 26, 2018 By admin

“When you get to the end of all the light you know and it’s time to step into the darkness of the unknown, faith is knowing that one of two things shall happen: either you will be given something solid to stand on, or you will be taught how to fly.” ― Edward Teller

Help Me Wonder

November 20, 2018 By admin

Dear God: Sometimes I am so busy with work I forget how to be amazed! Nothing surprises me. Sunrises and sunsets are routine events that fail to inspire. Rain is an interruption! Children are distracting and noisy! I have been squeezed into the Protestant work ethic that tells me my worth is tied to my ability to produce.

Like a machine I churn out product for profit and gain. I’m obsessed with rising above mediocrity! How can I notice the smell of Spring flowers, or hear the wind blowing through the trees near my home? My eyes work fine, but I’ve lost the ability to see with my heart.

Please revive my spirit and fill me with wonder! Thank you for helping me to notice when it’s gone.

Home Again

November 13, 2018 By admin

One particular November day, my son Michael and I had taken his old 1976 pick-up to the wooded lot in back of our home to take care of some fallen trees. Our little “forest” was about ¼ mile from our house at the end of a grassy trail.

After cutting up firewood with a chainsaw, and throwing it into the back of the old green and white Chevy, the weariness began to seep its way into my tired old body…with each block of wood. I was grateful to see the sun setting, and the phrase “bone-tired” crept across my mind as I trudged back towards home on foot.

The wind sent the brown and yellow leaves scurrying along the ground around my old sneakers.  With each rhythmic, crunchy footstep, I came closer and closer to the clearing where I could see the outline of our small farmhouse in the distance. As I drew nearer, I could make out the warm glow of the kitchen lights through the window…but it wasn’t until I was just outside the door that I smelled the supper that my wife had prepared for us.

After spending a few hours in the crisp autumn air, that scent of chili was as welcome to me as the warmth of a fireplace on a winter’s night. I had enjoyed working with my son in the woods, but it was good to be home! Upon removing my coat and washing my hands, I gratefully plopped down into a comfy chair with my bowl of home-cooked goodness, and a handful of tortilla chips.

Supper tasted especially good, and upon finishing my last spoonful, a thought crossed my mind: “I have SO MUCH to be thankful for!” Sometimes, it’s the small stuff that hits me just right…like this hot bowl of chili after a hard day’s work, or the smile of a family member who has been looking forward to seeing me walk through the door. I’m always grateful, but every once in a while God reminds me in very simple ways, the blessings He daily gives.

Reminds me of a verse in the Bible: “But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content” (1 Timothy 6:8, ESV).

As Little Children

November 7, 2018 By admin

Dear God: I can hear my grandchildren wrestling in the living room and I’m not sure I’ve ever heard anything more delightful. The baby is just developing his belly laugh and my four-year-old loves making him laugh. They giggle for the shear joy of it and luckily for me, they do it often.

When was the last time I laughed out loud out of joy. A lot of the time I act like things are pretty grim and are no laughing matter. But in reality, life is good. I have children who’ve grown in the Lord, married loving people and birthed children who are healthy and happy – thus the giggling. Sure, I’m getting older and have some aches and pains, but I’m so blessed. God thank for you for all you’ve given me, including the joy of laughing out loud and help me do it more often.

In Jesus’ name. Amen!

Dee Litten Whited writes from the east coast.
