Misjudging Motives

October 15, 2018 By admin

“Dad, can I have a few more gallons of gas for my pick-up? I’m almost completely out.” My 16 year-old son has had an old 1976 Chevy pick-up since he was 12, and has driven it around our little North Dakota farmstead for a while now. Country kids often do these kinds of things on the family farm, and my son has enjoyed driving this old truck to the back woods of our property for years.

Recently though, he had begun to ask for fuel to put in his tank. He was short on cash but still wanted to be able to drive the old pickup around the property…and so I allowed him to remove some fuel from the stash that we kept in the garage for mowing our lawns. Upon the third time that he requested gas for his truck, I found myself getting a bit annoyed. He had been driving his truck every night to the back woods at sundown, and I began to privately question his use of petrol when he clearly didn’t seem to be accomplishing much on the property on his nightly excursions.

“What are you doing in the woods that would cause you to need to go up there every night? I’m not made of money ya know, and unless you’re doing something really important with that truck, I’m wondering why you need that gas so regularly.” As my cynical words rushed out carelessly, my son looked at the ground. “Seriously Michael, why are you going to the backwoods every night at around the same time?”

My son fidgeted, his hands stuffed in his jean pockets as he kicked at the dirt in the driveway. He spoke so softly that I had to strain to hear his quiet reply. “Well Dad, I go up there every night to watch the sun go down and I spend time praying.” My eyes immediately filled with tears and I couldn’t stop the lump from forming in my throat. My boy was spending time with His Creator every night in a holy place that was all his own, and I had misjudged his actions as merely wanting more gas to drive through the woods in his pickup.

There are so many times in my life when I have misjudged others that I have lost count. I have jumped to conclusions about peoples’ motives, have discredited their actions, and sought to justify my self-centered indignation about what I thought they were doing. I had done the same thing with my only son, and my heart ached to think that I had even opened up the conversation when this soft-spoken young man had made his trivial request. My boy was using the fuel for a higher purpose, and although he could’ve walked to the backwoods, driving his pick-up was part of the spiritual routine of connecting with his Heavenly Father.

I smiled through my tears as I put my arm around his shoulders. “Son, I had no idea you spent time with God every night. I’m sorry that I even questioned you about it. Take all the gas you think you’ll need.”

When I Am Tempted

August 7, 2018 By admin

“Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.”  – Mike Tyson

I like that quote. It may seem violent on the surface but it aptly sums up the human plight of temptation and our inability to deal with it on our own. I’m sure Mr. Tyson wasn’t even thinking about a spiritual application when he said this, but I’m going to go out on a limb and attempt one.

Dr. Loran Nordgren, a senior lecturer at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management in Chicago, ran a series of experiments that placed college students in “tempting situations” to smoke, eat junk food, or forgo studying. The research found that we often display what’s called a “restraint bias.” In other words, we tend to overestimate how much self-control we will have against temptation when we’re not in the “heat of the moment.”

Our “restraint bias” causes us to think that we can handle more temptation than we actually can. Dr. Nordgren warned that “Those who are most confident about their self-control are the most likely to give in to temptation.”* All of our well-laid plans on how we’re going to deal with life’s temptations, can very quickly evaporate into thin air if we’re attempting to fight the battle on our own…especially in the heat of the moment.

“No test or temptation that comes your way is beyond the course of what others have had to face. All you need to remember is that God will never let you down; He’ll never let you be pushed past your limit; He’ll always be there to help you come through it” 1 Corinthians 10:13.

If I’m dealing with temptation that seems to get the better of me, there are a couple of things that help me to better position myself for victory:

1. I recognize that I’m not the only person who’s ever had the temptation that I’m struggling with. I’m not exactly sure why that seems to be strangely comforting to me, but it is. It means that I’m not alone. Others have walked the same road of temptation.

2. I don’t have what it takes to get past this on my own. I need help, and God has promised me that He’s already provided a way out. As difficult as this is for me to internalize sometimes, I choose to remember that it is God’s faithfulness that helps me deal…not my faithfulness.

I’ve proven to myself (over and over again), that I can be my own worst enemy when it comes to dealing with temptation, but my Creator has also proven that He always shows up to help me. Remembering this helps me move forward with faith and confidence.

Jackie’s Life

July 31, 2018 By admin

In the movie 42, Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford) is a Major League team executive with a bold idea. Rickey recruits Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman), an African-American baseball player playing in the Negro League, to break the unspoken color line and become the first modern African American Major League player. As both anticipate, this becomes a major challenge for Robinson and his family as they endure unrelenting racism on and off the field, from player and fan alike. As Jackie struggles against his nature to deal with the abuse, he finds an ally in Ricky, who is also a Christian.

On their first meeting, Robinson asks Rickey, “You want a player that doesn’t have the guts to fight back?”

“No. No.” replies Rickey. “I want a player who has the guts not to fight back. People aren’t going to like this. They’re going to do anything to get you to react. Follow a curse with a curse and they’ll hear only yours. Follow a blow with a blow and they’ll say the Negro lost his temper; that the Negro does not belong. Your enemy will be out in force and you cannot meet him on his own low ground. We win with hitting, running, fielding — only that. We win only if the world is convinced of two things: That you are a fine gentleman, and a great ball player. Like our Savior, you’re got to have the guts to turn the other cheek. Can you do it?”*

“To him who strikes you on the cheek, offer also the other; and from him who takes away your cloak, don’t withhold your coat also” (Luke 9:29, WEB).

“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger” (Proverbs 15:1, NASB).

It seems that much of society’s view of dealing with conflict is quite different from the response to relational struggle that Jesus spelled out in the scriptures.

Radical? Undoubtedly. Effective? Jackie Robinson’s career testifies to it.

Is it possible that we could learn something from this amazing baseball player who chose to follow the words of the One that he claimed to follow?  It’s well worth our consideration!

Sharing Joy

July 3, 2018 By admin

He was beaming, and as I looked in the rear-view mirror I could see that he was enjoying himself…immensely. Our family recently purchased a “new to us” vehicle. After years of driving around in a variety of mini-vans, we were looking for something a little more “snappy,” preferably with four wheel drive because of our predictably harsh winters that often occur in our state.

My 16 year old son was very excited about our new acquisition. He passed his driving test with flying colors 6 months ago, and he is becoming a very careful and reliable driver. I could almost hear the thoughts that were swirling around in his head about the “coolness” of the new family SUV. I was excited about it too, but it was obvious that my boy was even more interested in moving into a sportier ride.

After making the purchase, getting the insurance lined up, and registering the vehicle, he and I made our way to the seller’s house where we would mount the license plates on our new Toyota and drive it away. En route to our destination he jokingly asked, “Well dad, do you want me to drive the new car home, or are you going to?” The look on his face told me that he already knew the answer, and had resigned himself to following me back in the older vehicle.

I had already thought about this particular trip that we were now taking, and my answer visibly shocked him. “I want you to drive the new car home,” I said with a smile. “Are you serious?” he excitedly asked. I smiled again and replied, “Yeah, I’m serious. I really want you to enjoy the experience of driving it home.” Because of my love for him, it wasn’t a sacrifice to throw him the keys.

I personally wanted to experience pulling into the driveway of our house, but the thought of my son’s enjoyment as he proudly commandeered our new “wheels” caused my desire to pale by comparison. I drove the older car and enjoyed every minute of watching him follow in my rear-view mirror. He was visibly smitten by the newness of it all, and when we finally arrived at home I was thrilled to hear him say, “Wow, that was awesome!”

“…it is more blessed to give than to receive.” (Acts 20:35, KJV).

I was reminded of this truism once again, that when we truly love people, giving of ourselves isn’t drudgery; it’s a natural extension of our relationship with them.
