Deadly Fumes

May 8, 2019 By admin

“Mike, what’s that noise?” It was early morning, and I probably would’ve slept right through the loud beeping sound that was coming from our living room if it wasn’t for my wife’s inquiry. My head felt foggy as I arose and jammed my feet into my slippers. I didn’t want to get up, but the beeping persisted.

Our family recently had a wood pellet stove installed in our home in an attempt to save money on our fuel bill. The heat generated from this stove has legitimately helped with the temperature of our home, and we have already seen a significant drop in our fuel costs. I’ve been challenged, however, with learning all the proper ways to maintain this stove at optimal performance. According to the manual (that I recently re-read), I am supposed to clean the ashes out from this stove on a daily basis. It hadn’t been done in about five days, if I am remembering correctly.

Because the ashes had built up in the fire-pot, the fuel was no longer able to ignite into flame when it was deposited into the burning area. This stove was literally smoldering itself into a sooty, non-burning, noxious mess…and the beeping that we had heard was from our carbon monoxide alarm. I opened the windows of our home in the wee hours of the morning (during winter weather), and spent the next hour doing what I should have done days before.

I shudder when I think about what could have happened to my family if we hadn’t installed a carbon monoxide alarm in our living room. That tiny white battery-operated box had detected something that was potentially fatal while we peacefully slept, oblivious to the dangers that surrounded us.

I couldn’t help but think about all the spiritually-challenging occurrences that we encounter in our daily schedules…undetected and potentially deadly situations that can kill the sacred atmosphere that we truly desire. Staying connected is like emptying the ashes of our lives. A relationship with the Almighty helps our spiritual fires to burn clean and brightly.

Light and Warmth

February 25, 2019 By admin

On a sunny winter day we opened the shades on the south facing windows and sliding doors of our home. During most of the year they are closed to keep the house cool, but during a cold snap the warmth is welcome. The sleepy cats soon found places in sunshine spots on the floor to luxuriate.

Along with the bright light and warmth of morning, the truth of my housekeeping was on display everywhere. The disturbing revelation included dirty specks on the floors, smudges and rain residue on the windows and sliding doors, greasy marks and fingerprints on my kitchen cabinets and stainless steel appliances, plus cat hair on the furniture. So much cleaning had been neglected! I started to feel ashamed and then defensive. I argued with myself: most of the time this doesn’t show, I have other things in my life, I don’t use a maid, my house is cleaner than average, it looks fine in the afternoon and evening light. Oh, just shut the shades so I don’t have to see all this!

Yet the older I get, the less confident I feel about walking in darkness or dim lighting. I am glad that there is a streetlight near my house. I don’t really like driving my car in new routes in the dark. Sure I can use a flashlight or my car headlights but that only lights a path and there are a lot of unknowns in the shadows. Crime statistics prove that the majority of evil is done under the darkness of night.

Have you ever taken something into sunlight so you could see it’s “true colors”? I am reminded about how all of us sometime like to hide in the dark. Or we keep others in the dark so they won’t know the truth about us. We can fool ourselves for so long but if the sunlight of truth or honesty hits us, we are shamed, angry or defensive as we back into the darkness. In 2 Corinthians 4:4, the Apostle Paul tells us that the god of this age has blinded unbelievers so “they don’t see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ,” (NIV).

Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life” John 8:12.  God often shows up as a burning or blinding light in Bible stories. He, as the source of energy and life, is a ball of fire, a burning bush, an eternal flame, a brilliance too much for human eyes. However, there is mercy once we are in God’s wonderful light (I Peter 2:9-10).

God made his light shine in our hearts (2 Corinthians 4: 6) and we are invited to use the light that God gives us to help brighten this world—to bring an end to darkness of the mind and spirit (Matthew 5:14-16). I want to welcome God’s light and warmth in a world that so often presses darkness upon us and chills us with fear and anxiety.

In the bright sunshine I marveled at the delicate details of my cats’ fur, the flowers outside the window, and a blue cloudless sky. Then  I swept my floor, wiped some cabinet fronts and started singing a song from my childhood. “This little light of mine, I’m going let it shine.”

Questions for personal journaling or group discussion:

  1. Tell about a time when you longed for sunshine.
  2. In Revelation 21, the New Jerusalem or the Holy City that God has prepared for his believers is described. Read verses 23 and 24. What is the “glory of God” to you?

Gratitude Brought Us Here

November 5, 2018 By admin

“I am thankful for the wind. I am thankful for the wind. I am thankful for the wind.”

I can’t remember if I said those words in my head or out loud, but I do know that I repeated them over and over again. It was day four of a six-day road trip that I was taking to Atlanta, Ga., which was to be my new home.

Several years ago my life was a blur. I had given away most of my belongings and what remained was loaded into my tiny red coupe. Despite the fact that it was thirteen years old, I was confident in my little car. I had it thoroughly inspected by a mechanic and was assured that it would survive the trip. I knew that what my car lacked in trunk space, it more than made up for in gas mileage, gumption, and overall cuteness.

So, I set off with my best friend (who had kindly offered to take the trip with me) at the wheel. I sat in the passenger’s seat with my puppy, Sparta, on my lap and stared out of the window marveling at the beauty of nature.

We were having a blast during our trip! We relaxed by the budget motel pools, we met people from around the world, improvised meals in supermarket parking lots, and sang at the top of our lungs to whatever was on the radio.

And then, it happened.

Somewhere between Oklahoma City, Okla. and Little Rock, Ark., the car’s air conditioner stopped working. I reminded myself that things could have been worse. The air conditioner could have broken when we were in the Arizona desert. And it wasn’t really that bad, when you have the windows down and are traveling 65 mph, you hardly miss the air conditioner.

And then, (the other) it happened.

Somewhere between Little Rock, Ark. and Nashville, Tenn., we hit traffic and were forced to sit in sweltering humidity for two and a half hours. Every once in a while, a gust of wind would come in and give us three seconds of relief from our suffering and I would repeat, “I am thankful for the wind. I am thankful for the wind.”

This may not seem remarkable to some, but I was quite impressed with myself. For someone with a temper like mine, thanking God for the wind in lieu of kicking and screaming was a new and welcome change.

When we got to Nashville we found an amazing mechanic who offered to fix the car very quickly and for a very reasonable price. Seeing my license plate he exclaimed, in a thick Tennessee accent, “How’d you make it all the way over here from California?!”

I smiled as I replied, “Gratitude.”

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:18, NIV).

Love Wins

October 11, 2018 By admin

The Apostle Paul was pretty radical and smart. He points out again and again that love is the best means to any end. He actually is quoted saying that the only way we can overpower evil is to do good. This word good—agathos—actually unpacks itself to mean tangible acts of favor. It was a descendant of the ultimate word for love, agape, and was all about literal, audible, seeable expressions of love. It was dropping off a pie, washing a car or sending nice cards.

And what a brilliant idea! Your boss treats you like dirt and tries to get you fired and you send her tickets to the game and her favorite cookies. You do it for real and mean it. You get her coupons for a car wash and you go out of your way to show kindness. You are relentless. Who could stand up to that? The tyrant in all of us would eventually crumble. I figure that people either die on the hill for love, think Jesus, or for themselves, think Judas. Usually, given enough time, mean people crumble down and start returning the favor, when loved. Remember the Titans? Whatever the response, love is going to win out because love is stronger than death itself.

I think one of the reasons we don’t see so much of love winning the day is because most of us are not fully committed yet. We waffle on whether love is truly our best bet. Think about the last time you were given a dose of hate. It was civil, but you knew what it was. So did you meet it with gifts and gentle respect? No? It seems to me that if we stayed the course and trusted love to be the way out, we’d see more beautiful endings and have more beautiful stories.

Back in the seventies Jim Elliot, Nate Saint and a few others flew down south in a little plane and dropped gifts out their windows to a tribe of people who didn’t know Jesus. Their plan was pretty simple. They’d show that they were friends with all these gifts and then land their plane and share the great news about love and Heaven and everything else. I don’t remember exactly how long they flew over before they finally landed. It was probably several months.

Well when they touched down all excited to meet their new friends, their new friends rushed out of the greenery and took them down. I can’t even imagine it. There they were arrowed down with their wives and kids listening in on the radio back home. It was printed up as this huge tragedy. They were all very young and very good citizens. It was also just the beginning.

This story is beautiful because Nate Saint, the pilot, had a sister who decided that all these people needed was a little more loving. Defying instinct she found her way down to this very tribe that had murdered her brother and moved in. And who could stop her? And what would you say to the lady who was insistent on being your friendly neighbor after you killed her little brother? It was over. Those tribal people were busted. They couldn’t argue with that kind of love and they caved.

What’s even better is how they all carry on, even to this day. My sister went to hear Nate Saint’s son tell the story. She said that he brought this tribal chief up on stage next to him. She said they hugged and then the chief said that he had been there when the plane had landed and he was actually the one who had given the order for Nate to be murdered. Yes, and then with this big grin on his face he called Nate’s son his son, and Nate’s grandchildren his grandchildren. They were family thanks to Jesus. You could have heard a pin drop.

And what if we hung on like they did? And what if we kept passing out the love no matter what?  I think Jesus would have more of a chance at saving us all, and I think we would all be better for it.

I think that this could be revolutionary. I think that if every person who claimed Jesus to be their Savior made it to loving like this or beyond we would all have to take a few weeks off work each year just to celebrate. What would actually happen is we’d experience something very close to Heaven on earth and we’d feel things we’ve never ever felt before.

Think about it. Every time you have been shown love when you were on the hate of the chart, it inspired and even stretched you towards loving back. And the more profound their love to your hate the more dramatic you changed. Love works in all directions. The more I bestow good on you, the stronger I become. And if it’s crazy hard because you killed my parents or something gruesome like that, the more I will be changed for loving.

This is our power. Love wins.

Clarissa Worley Sproul writes from the Pacific Northwest.

The Evidence of Experience

November 3, 2017 By admin

O taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man that trusteth in him. Psalm 34:8. There is an evidence that is open to all—the most highly educated, and the most illiterate—the evidence of experience. God invites us to prove for ourselves the reality of His Word, the truth of His promises. He bids us “taste and see that the Lord is good.” Instead of depending upon the word of another, we are to taste for ourselves…
