Monday: Christ’s Method Alone

What do the following stories teach us about ministry to the needy?
John 5:1-9
Mark 1:23-28
Ellen G. White provides a five-step process of Jesus’ method in how to minister, especially to those in need: “Christ’s method alone will give true success in reaching the people. The Saviour mingled with men as one who desired their good. He showed His sympathy for them, ministered to their needs, and won their confidence. Then He bade them, ‘Follow Me.’ ”—The Ministry of Healing, p. 143.
First, we must mingle with the helpless, spend time getting to know them, and understand their needs with the intention of doing good for them. Look at what Jesus did with the paralytic at the pool. Jesus was right there, amid the “great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, paralyzed” (John 5:3, NKJV).
Second, we need to show sympathy. This can be challenging in some cases because of distrust, and because sometimes people use kindness as a means of winning the confidence of someone whom they later abuse. Nevertheless, God is calling us to show sympathy without expecting anything in return.
The third step is to minister to their needs. This involves more than just words. It takes action to minister to the needs of a friend or a stranger. Jesus spoke with the paralytic, asked what he wanted, and then worked a miracle in his behalf. In the story of the man possessed by an “unclean spirit,” Jesus took complete control of the situation, doing for the helpless man what he could not do for himself.
The fourth step is winning their confidence. When we minister to people, when we help them, they will learn to trust us and what we say to them. So, when we talk to them about Jesus, they would be more open to listen. Jesus didn’t want just to heal them physically; He wanted them to have eternal life in Him (see John 10:10).
The last step is to help lead them to Jesus, an act that requires faith from both you and the one whom you help.
We generally can’t do the kind of miracles that Jesus did. But what are ways that we can still minister to those who need help?

Lesson 8.Mission to the Needy | 8.1 The Faith of Friends
The account of friends bringing their helpless companion to Jesus is truly inspiring. It shows us that true friendship involves not only words but also actions. Despite facing obstacles, these men took responsibility for caring for their friend. This story reminds us that sometimes it requires creative and unconventional approaches to help people and lead them to Christ.
The faith and determination of these men are remarkable. They didn’t let difficulties discourage them but found an innovative way to bring their friend to Jesus. This challenges us to be creative in our own service and not give up when traditional methods fall short.
The text also underscores the importance of recognizing the needs of people around us and helping them, whether they are friends, neighbors, or strangers. Ellen White encourages us not to be passive but to proactively reach out to the needs of the helpless, distressed, and needy.
The call to lead people to Jesus, portrayed as the great Physician bringing forgiveness and healing, is an encouraging reminder that we can all contribute to improving the lives of others. The question at the end of the text, asking who around us needs help and what we will do for them, prompts reflection and encourages taking concrete steps to assist the needy and lead them to Christ.

God and Human Suffering | A Glimpse into the Book of Job
Today, we want to collectively focus on the theme of human suffering and take a glimpse into the book of Job. In Matthew 6:34, it says, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” These words of Jesus remind us that life is marked by challenges and difficulties.
The book of Job captivates with its uniqueness in the biblical context. Unlike other books in the Bible, Job stands without the usual framework of Israelite history. No reference to the promises to Abraham, no mention of the exodus from Egypt. Why this absence? Perhaps because Moses wrote the book of Job in Midian before the exodus from Egypt even took place.
However, there might be a deeper reason. The book of Job touches on a universal theme, the suffering of humanity. It knows no national boundaries, no temporal limitations. Job’s suffering is not confined to a people or an era. Jew or non-Jew, we all can identify with Job’s pain, for he represents suffering in a fallen world.
The book of Job shows us that suffering is a part of human existence. Job, a man of exceptional righteousness, was still visited by calamities. Disease, loss, and pain marked his life. And in this suffering, Job sought answers, an understanding of God’s actions.
The words of Jesus remind us not to worry too much about tomorrow. Each day has its own challenges, yet we trust that God will take care of what is His. In Job, we see that God’s ways often surpass our human imagination, yet they are full of love and grace.
Let us trust in God’s promises in times of suffering and trials. Job’s story teaches us that despite the pain, God’s plan is greater than what we can comprehend. May the realization that we are not alone in our suffering and the hope in God’s care carry us through life’s challenges.
In this trust, let us pray together and strengthen each other in love and comfort.
