God’s Mission, My Mission – Lesson 13: The End of God’s Mission | Sabbath School with Pastor Mark Finley

December 23, 2023 By admin

Series GOD’S MISSION, MY MISSION with Pastor Mark Finley  |
Lesson 13: The End of God’s Mission |
Lesson 13, “The End of God’s Mission,” guides us through the book of Revelation, emphasizing the clear focus on God’s end-time mission. The Trinity collaborates in rescuing humanity, with Revelation highlighting the urgency of this mission. The Three Angels’ Messages, situated in the context of the Great Controversy, call for proclaiming the eternal Gospel and promoting worship of the Creator. Success in the mission is defined by shaping faithful disciples who are pure, loyal, and open to the Holy Spirit. The vision of the New Earth concludes the lesson, encouraging believers to invest in God’s mission, reach unreached people groups, and ultimately live with the redeemed in the promised new heaven and on the New Earth.
Memory Text: 2.Peter 3:11.12 – “Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God . . . ?”
Content:
13.1 Revelation: God’s Last-Day Mission

The opening lines of Revelation clarify its focus on God’s end-time mission. Verses 1:4–5 demonstrate the Trinity working together in the salvation of humanity, highlighting Jesus as a faithful witness and the firstborn from the dead. Titles in Revelation 1:6 and 1 Peter 2:9 emphasize that God’s redemption brings not only security but also a new, royal, and priestly status for believers. The urgency of the mission is underscored in Revelation 1:7, pointing out that Jesus is coming, and the nations will mourn their loss. Thus, Revelation clearly concentrates on God’s mission among people in the end times.
13.2 Three Angels’ Messages and Mission
Revelation provides a compelling depiction of the Great Controversy, particularly emphasized in Revelation 12:12, where the devil descends to earth with great wrath. Revelation 14:6–12 presents the Three Angels’ Messages, the core of our Seventh-day Adventist mission. This message warns of end-time events and calls for choosing the eternal Gospel and worshiping the Creator. Jesus’ statement that whoever does not gather with Him scatters underscores the urgency of our mission to prepare the world for the decision between life and death. Our calling is to proclaim the hope of the eternal Gospel and warn the world of the impending events while preserving God’s commandments and faith in Jesus.
13.3 The Final Crisis
The mission command that Jesus gave to His disciples emphasizes the universal significance of the message to be taken to all nations. The Three Angels’ Messages expressed in Revelation 14:6 reflect this mission, urging all nations and languages to recognize the truth. Christ’s love extends to all humanity, irrespective of race or ethnic background. The end times will be characterized by a clear separation between those who submit to Satan and those who obey Jesus Christ. Amid increasing polarization and threats to conscience freedom, it is urgently necessary to proclaim the Gospel and expose Satan’s strategies – a task central to the Three Angels’ Messages and our mission.
13.4 Success in Mission
Success in the mission is not solely defined by quantitative measures such as baptism numbers or church size but, above all, by the character of disciples who become faithful followers of Jesus. The focus is on the process of sowing and watering, while God brings about the growth, as described by Paul in 1 Corinthians 3:6. True followers of Jesus are characterized by purity and loyalty, akin to a pure bride remaining faithful to her fiancé. They heed the gentle voice of the Holy Spirit, remain unaffected by deceptions, doubts, or immoral behavior, and are open to correction and spiritual instruction. Success in the mission is thus manifested in shaping disciples who are not only saved but actively participate in Jesus’ mission.
13.5 Mission Complete
Revelation 21:1–4 and 21:22–22:5 paint the picture of a glorious New Earth, freed from death, sin, and wickedness. This paradise will be populated by people of all ethnicities and languages, reunited with their loved ones and encountering their loving Redeemer. The General Conference Mission Committee has established clear criteria for reached and unreached people groups, with a reached group being capable of testifying without external assistance. Now is the time to invest in God’s mission, make disciples of unreached people groups, and thus hasten the return of our Redeemer. This mission has the ultimate goal of living with the redeemed in the promised new heaven and on the New Earth.
13.6 Summary
The final lesson poignantly reflects on God’s end-time mission. Revelation highlights the Trinity working together in rescuing humanity and underscores the urgency of the mission amid the challenges of the end times. The Three Angels’ Messages are identified as the core of our Seventh-day Adventist mission, calling for proclaiming the eternal Gospel and promoting worship of the Creator. Success in the mission is measured not only quantitatively but, above all, by shaping faithful disciples with purity, loyalty, and openness to the Holy Spirit. The concluding lesson outlines the anticipated picture of the New Earth, populated by people of all ethnicities, and calls for investing in God’s mission, reaching unreached people groups, and ultimately living with the redeemed in the promised new heaven and on the New Earth.

It’s been more than 2,000 years since Jesus walked the dusty roads of Palestine. Yet, God is the same today as He was yesterday—reaching His hand out in reconciliation. Pastor Ted Wilson and his wife, Nancy, explore this topic, including God’s ministry of healing wounds, making people whole, and offering us the opportunity to be united in Him.
As prophecy foretold, we believe that Jesus came to this earth as a babe, lived a life filled with a heaven-sent purpose, died and rose again, and is now ministering on our behalf in the heavenly sanctuary. And soon, He will come again to take us home!

Lesson 12: Esther and Mordecai | 12.6 Summary

December 21, 2023 By admin

12.6 Summary
Lesson 12 discusses the Book of Esther in the Old Testament. Esther, a Jewish orphan, is elevated to the position of Queen of Persia and plays a crucial role in saving her people from imminent destruction by the malicious Haman. Her faith, determination, and courage, even risking her own life, make her an inspiring example of loyalty and trust in God. The book also emphasizes how God’s hand often works behind the scenes, even when His name is not explicitly mentioned. The lesson encourages reflection on one’s own faith convictions and becoming aware of the challenge to remain steadfast in difficult situations.
Discussion Questions:
  1. The Book of Esther leaves some questions unanswered, especially regarding Esther’s role at the king’s court, despite her elevation to queen. How can these things be reconciled with her faith, or is it even possible?
The biblical portrayal of Esther in the Book of Esther allows for some interpretation and leaves certain details open, particularly regarding her relationship with the king and her behavior at the court. Here are some considerations:
  1. Esther’s presence in the royal palace: Esther became queen under extraordinary circumstances after the previous queen, Vashti, was deposed. The Bible does not provide detailed information on how Esther came into this position, but it is implied that she was chosen due to her exceptional beauty and grace (Esther 2:17). There are no clear indications that she actively sought to become queen.
  2. Her identity as a Jew: Esther kept her Jewish identity a secret, following Mordecai’s instructions (Esther 2:10). This decision could be attributed to the fact that it was not safe or advantageous to openly discuss her ethnic background at that time. It could be seen as a strategy to avoid potential biases or difficulties.
  3. Acting in secret: Although the name of God is not directly mentioned in the Book of Esther, God’s work is evident through events in the background. Esther and Mordecai may have acted in secret to fulfill God’s plan. The book emphasizes divine providence and how seemingly normal events are integrated into God’s plan.
  4. Risks for her people: As queen, Esther had an influential position at the court, which later proved crucial for the salvation of her people. However, there was a significant risk for her to approach the king without an invitation (Esther 4:11). Her actions required courage, and she recognized the potential dangers.
Overall, the story of Esther shows that people in difficult situations are sometimes forced to make wise decisions to uphold their convictions while achieving the best possible outcomes. Esther is portrayed in the Bible as a crucial figure for the salvation of her people, and her actions can be considered part of God’s plan, even if she did not explicitly act through divine revelation.
2.The famous words of Esther, “If I perish, I perish” (Esther 4:16 NIV), resonate as an example of loyalty even in the face of death throughout the millennia. How do her words reflect what God’s people will experience in the end times when the themes in Revelation 13 become a reality?
Esther’s famous words, “If I perish, I perish” (Esther 4:16), attest to her dedication, courage, and willingness to advocate for her people, even if it might cost her own life. These words serve as an impressive example of loyalty and steadfastness, even under extreme conditions.
Regarding the end times and the themes in Revelation 13, Esther’s words could serve as inspiration for God’s people when faced with challenges and persecutions. Here are some parallels:
  1. Steadfastness in faith and convictions: Esther demonstrated through her words that she was willing to stand up for her convictions, even if it involved personal sacrifice. In the end times, believers may face similar challenges where they must choose to remain faithful to their belief in God, even when it becomes difficult.
  2. Willingness to advocate for others: Esther not only stood up for herself but also for her people. In the end times, it will be crucial for God’s people to advocate for each other and show solidarity, especially when it comes to principles of faith and protecting religious freedom.
  3. Trust in God’s sovereignty: Esther’s words also reflect a deep trust in God’s sovereignty. Similarly, believers in the end times may need to rely on their trust in God and be conscious that their ultimate security and salvation come from Him.
  4. Willingness to take personal risks: Esther was willing to take personal risks to fulfill her duty to God and her people. In the end times, believers may face decisions where they need to make personal sacrifices to remain true to their faith.
  5. Remembrance of God’s providence: Although God’s name is not explicitly mentioned in the Book of Esther, His providence is evident through the events. Believers in the end times may be encouraged by Esther’s example that even in difficult times, God’s plan is at work.
Overall, Esther’s words can serve as timeless encouragement that true loyalty to God and the principles of faith can endure even in the most challenging times.
3.Discuss the question at the end of the Monday section about whether we should hide our faith at certain times. Should that even be an option for us?
The question of whether we should hide our faith at certain times touches upon a complex issue that depends on various factors. Here are some considerations:
  1. Security concerns: In some situations, openly discussing one’s faith can indeed be dangerous. In countries or environments where religious freedom is restricted or persecuted, it may be necessary to be cautious and not publicly disclose one’s faith to ensure personal safety.
  2. Wisdom and tact: There are situations where tact and wisdom are necessary to effectively share the Gospel. Sometimes, choosing an approach that is appealing and respectful can promote understanding and openness, rather than provoking rejection or hostility through open confrontation.
  3. Testimony through lifestyle: Even if there are times when direct preaching or evangelizing is challenging, one’s lifestyle can be a powerful testimony. A life reflecting the love and principles of Jesus can often be as effective as words.
  4. Professional or social consequences: In some environments, openly confessing one’s faith could lead to professional or social consequences. In such cases, believers may need to weigh how much they are willing to sacrifice for their faith.
  5. Seeking God’s guidance: Ultimately, it is important to seek God’s guidance in this matter. Through prayer and spiritual considerations, one can receive guidance on how to act in specific situations.
The Bible encourages us to be wise and humble in how we live and share our faith. For example, Colossians 4:5-6 (NIV) says, “Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.”
Overall, hiding one’s faith should not be a permanent option, as we are called to be the “light of the world” (Matthew 5:14) and proclaim the Gospel. However, it is about proceeding wisely and lovingly, depending on the circumstances we face.

Lesson 12: Esther and Mordecai | 12.5 The Miracle of Purim

December 20, 2023 By admin

12.5 The Miracle of Purim
The Book of Esther is indeed a unique biblical work as the name of God is not explicitly mentioned in it. This has led to various theological discussions and interpretations. Some believe that the absence of God’s name may indicate that God acts in secret, while others point out that it is a way to recognize God’s work even in seemingly ordinary events.
Similar to the Book of Esther, God’s actions in our daily lives can sometimes be subtle and concealed through seemingly normal events. We might tend to look for spectacular signs or miracles, overlooking that God’s presence is often found in the unassuming details of our everyday lives.
The ability to recognize God’s work amid seemingly ordinary events requires mindfulness, spiritual sensitivity, and a look beyond the surface. It is an invitation to look deeper and discover divine action in the small things that can easily be overlooked.
The decision of the Jews to include the Book of Esther in the biblical canon may suggest that in the story of Esther, they recognized not only a political rescue but also the invisible hand of God. This perspective reminds us that God’s work is often subtle yet powerful, and the absence of obvious signs does not mean that God is not at work.
It challenges us to seek the signs of divine presence in our own lives, not only in extraordinary moments but also in everyday, seemingly normal events. It is an invitation to discover the divine in the ordinary and recognize the depths of spiritual truth in the seemingly simple aspects of our lives.
Read Esther 9:1–12. What was the result of Esther’s efforts?
In Esther 9:1–12, it is reported that the Jews in the provinces of the Persian Empire, inspired by Esther’s efforts and the decree of King Ahasuerus, successfully defended themselves against their enemies. The plan of their enemies to destroy the Jews was reversed, and instead, the Jews gained victory over those who sought to harm them.
In summary, this section shows that the efforts of Esther and Mordecai were successful. The Jews were able to defend themselves against their enemies, and there was a decisive turn that secured their survival. This event is celebrated in the Jewish festival of Purim, which commemorates the rescue and survival of the Jewish community.
The Purim miracle in the Book of Esther is indeed a remarkable example of God’s action in a subtle and concealed manner. Instead of revoking the original decree for the destruction of the Jews, God allowed the Jews to defend themselves. The seemingly normal course of events, appearing as a natural sequence at first glance, bears the fingerprint of God working in the background to protect His people.
It is interesting to observe that the Persians noticed the effects of God’s intervention for the Jews. The fact that many people from the nations of the land became Jews shows how God’s work had a profound impact on the non-Jewish population. The miracle of Purim led people to recognize the power and goodness of the God of Israel and turn to Him.
The acknowledgment of God by the leaders of the Jewish people and the establishment of the Purim festival as an annual celebration testify to how crucial it is to consciously perceive God’s action in our lives and honor it. The festival not only commemorates the rescue of the Jews but also emphasizes gratitude to God for His guidance and deliverance.
This historical episode teaches us that God’s work does not always have to be spectacular and obvious to be powerful. Sometimes, the beauty of His action lies in the midst of the ordinary, hidden in seemingly natural events. It encourages us to be attentive, recognize God’s guidance, and respond with gratitude to His work in our lives.
Challenge: Pray to God, asking for the courage to share something He has done for you with someone on your prayer list this week.
“Lord, my Heavenly Father, I come before You and thank You for the many blessings You have bestowed upon my life. This week, I ask for courage and wisdom. May Your Spirit guide me and provide the opportunity to share with someone on my prayer list about Your great deeds in my life.
Give me the words to testify to Your love and faithfulness. May my testimony touch the heart of my fellow human being and serve to reveal Your greatness and goodness. Your work in my life is a precious gift, and I want to share it so that others may find the joy and comfort You provide.
Help me overcome my fears and uncertainties. Let me be a tool of Your love, and may Your light shine through my testimony into the world. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.”
Challenge Plus: Write in a journal or notebook the special little (or big) things that God does for you. Read through them and ask God to remind you of these things at the right time so that you can share them with someone.
This is a wonderful idea to become more aware of God’s action in our lives and cultivate gratitude. Here is a suggestion for the journal or notebook:
Gratitude Journal: God’s Action in My Life
Date: [Current Date]
Today, I am grateful for:
[Special Event or Blessing] – Write about a specific event or blessing you experienced today.
[Small Moment of Joy] – Record a small moment that brought you joy or comfort.
[Answered Prayer] – If God has answered a specific prayer of yours this week, share it.
[Random Encounter or Experience] – Describe a random encounter or unexpected event that shows God’s work in your daily life.
Prayer:
Lord, I thank You for all the wonderful things You do in my life. Bless me with an open heart to perceive Your goodness, and help me consciously capture these moments. May this journal become a tool that helps me recognize Your deeds and share them with others when the opportunity arises. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
May this journal help you become more aware of God’s work in your life and bear witness to His actions with gratitude.
