Job Chapter 40 – Job Becomes Silent Before God

Introduction

God had already answered Job out of the storm. After so many human voices, the Lord Himself now spoke. But His answer was different from what Job may have expected. God did not first explain all the reasons for Job’s suffering. Instead, He led him to marvel at creation.

In chapter 38, God had asked Job where he was when the earth was founded. He had spoken about the sea, to which He set boundaries, about morning, light and darkness, snow, rain, stars, clouds, lightning, lions, and ravens. Job was to recognize: human beings see only a small part, but God knows the whole.

In chapter 39, God led Job further through the world of animals. He spoke about mountain goats, deer, wild donkeys, wild oxen, ostriches, horses, hawks, and eagles. Each animal revealed God’s wisdom in its own way. Some were free, some strong, some mysterious, some fast and courageous. Job could marvel at them, but he could not control them.

Now a very important moment arrives. God asks Job directly whether a human being should contend with the Almighty. After all of God’s questions, Job realizes how limited his own understanding is. He does not answer with a long speech. He becomes silent. He places his hand over his mouth.

But God’s answer is not yet finished. God continues speaking and asks Job even deeper questions about justice, power, and humility. Then He shows him a mighty creature: Behemoth. This powerful animal reminds Job that God’s creative power is greater than human strength.

God Questions Job Directly

After the many questions about earth, sea, stars, weather, and animals, God now turns directly to Job again. In essence, He asks: Should the one who criticizes contend with the Almighty? Whoever wants to correct God must answer.

This question is very serious. In his pain, Job had asked many questions. He had sought God, lamented, and wished to present his case before Him. Now he truly stands before the voice of God.

But God shows Job: A human being cannot treat God like another person whom one puts on trial. God is the Almighty. He is the Creator who founded the earth, set boundaries for the sea, and made the animals in wisdom.

For hearts young and old, we might say it this way: If a child holds only one piece of a puzzle, that child cannot judge the whole picture as though all the pieces were visible. Job sees only one piece. God sees everything.

Job Becomes Silent

Job now answers. But his response is very different from his earlier long speeches. He says that he is insignificant. What can he answer God? He places his hand over his mouth.

This is a powerful image. When someone places a hand over the mouth, it means: I am silent. I will not keep speaking. I realize that my words are not enough.

Job does not say that his pain was imaginary. His suffering was truly severe. His tears were real. His losses were terrible. But before the greatness of God, Job recognizes: I have not understood everything. I cannot speak as though I fully comprehend God’s ways.

This moment is not an empty defeat. It is a holy moment of humility. Job is not broken down so that he becomes worthless. He becomes silent so that he can hear God anew.

Job Does Not Want to Keep Speaking as Before

Job says that he has spoken once, but will not answer again. Yes, twice he has spoken, but now he will add nothing more.

This shows that God’s questions have achieved their purpose. Job realizes: My words were many, but my knowledge was small. My questions were loud, but God’s wisdom is greater.

For children, we might picture it this way: Sometimes you are very sure that you have understood everything. Then someone shows you the whole picture, and suddenly you realize: I only saw one small part. Then you become quieter.

Job does not learn that questions are forbidden. The Bible has allowed his questions to stand for a long time. But he learns that questions before God must be joined with humility.

God Continues Speaking from the Storm

God’s answer does not end with Job’s silence. The Lord continues speaking from the storm. Again, His voice comes from this powerful manifestation that reveals God’s majesty.

The storm reminds us: God is not a small thought inside the human mind. He is the living Lord. His voice is stronger than the speeches of the friends, stronger than Elihu’s words, and stronger than Job’s lament.

God again tells Job to gird up his loins like a man. He is to be ready to listen and answer. God takes Job seriously, but He leads him deeper into truth.

Job is not simply sent away. God continues speaking with him. That alone is already grace: the Creator answers a suffering human being.

Would You Nullify My Justice?

God asks Job whether he wants to nullify God’s justice. Does Job want to condemn God so that he himself may appear right? This question strikes at the heart of the matter.

Job had defended his integrity. That was important, because his friends had falsely accused him. But in his pain, he had sometimes come close to making God’s actions appear unjust.

God shows him: You must not try to preserve your innocence by obscuring My justice. You do not need to lie and confess guilt that is not yours. But neither may you speak as though God were unjust.

This is a deep lesson. A person may honestly say: I do not understand God’s way. But he should be careful not to declare God guilty simply because he does not understand the path.

Do You Have an Arm Like God?

Then God asks Job whether he has an arm like God. In the Bible, the arm often represents strength and power. God asks: Do you have My strength? Can you thunder with a voice like Mine?

Job is human. He has suffered, lamented, and struggled. But he does not possess God’s power. He cannot command the thunder, guide the stars, or set boundaries for the sea.

For hearts young and old, we might say: You can be strong and still not be almighty. You can learn many things and still not know everything. Only God has perfect power and wisdom.

God does not lead Job into despair, but into truth. Job must recognize that he cannot take God’s place. Only God can govern the world with perfect justice.

Can Job Clothe Himself with Majesty?

God challenges Job, in a vivid picture, to adorn himself with glory and splendor, to clothe himself with honor and majesty. It is as though God is saying: If you want to judge God’s justice, then show whether you can bear God’s glory.

Of course Job cannot. No human being can clothe himself with divine majesty. People can wear beautiful clothes, put on crowns, or sit on high thrones. But that does not make them God.

God’s glory is not like a cloak that one can simply put on. It belongs to His very being. He is holy, eternal, just, and powerful.

Job must understand: The government of the world is not in human hands. Whoever cannot take God’s place should not proudly condemn God’s judgment.

Can Job Humble the Proud?

God continues by telling Job to pour out the fury of his anger and look on every proud person and bring him low. He is to humble the arrogant and crush the wicked where they stand.

These words show what divine judgment means. God sees pride, arrogance, and evil. He can judge them. But can Job do this? Can Job see every proud person, judge correctly, and bring them down with perfect justice?

Human beings can make mistakes. They see only the outward appearance. They do not know every heart, every thought, and every path. Therefore they cannot administer perfect judgment over the world.

God alone can do that. He sees every person exactly as they are. He knows the proud who hide themselves and the weak who are overlooked.

Can Job Hide the Wicked in the Dust?

God tells Job to hide the wicked together in the dust and bind their faces in a hidden place. This is a picture of final judgment over evil.

If Job could do this, then God would praise him and say that his own right hand could save him. But Job cannot. He cannot completely defeat the evil of the world.

Job had seen much injustice. He had asked why God did not intervene immediately. But now God asks him: Can you yourself judge every evil thing justly? Can you perfectly order the world?

Job must recognize: No. A human being may grieve over injustice and should love justice. But the final rule over evil belongs to God.

God Shows Job Behemoth

Then God directs Job’s attention to a mighty creature: Behemoth. God says that He made Behemoth just as He made Job. This animal too is therefore a creature of God.

Behemoth is described as an extremely strong animal. It eats grass like an ox, yet its strength is enormous. Power lies in its loins and in the muscles of its belly.

Many people have wondered what animal Behemoth refers to. Some think of a hippopotamus, others of a very large and powerful animal of the ancient world. For the story, the most important point is this: Behemoth displays God’s creative power.

Job is to look at this animal and marvel. He is to recognize: God has made creatures whose strength far surpasses that of human beings.

Behemoth Eats Grass and Yet Remains Mighty

God says that Behemoth eats grass like an ox. This is interesting because, despite its enormous strength, the animal is not described as a predator. It lives on plants and yet is impressively powerful.

This shows that strength can appear in many different forms in God’s creation. An animal does not need to display dangerous teeth in order to be mighty. Behemoth impresses through size, calmness, and strength.

For children, we might say: Some animals are strong even though they eat grass. A large animal can seem peaceful and yet be so powerful that people keep their distance.

God shows Job: My creation is full of surprises. Strength, gentleness, greatness, and mystery can exist together.

Its Bones Are Like Strong Bars

Behemoth’s bones are described as tubes of bronze, its limbs like bars of iron. These images show tremendous solidity. The animal is not fragile and weak, but massive and powerful.

Human beings can make tools from metal, but God gave this animal its strong body. Its strength was not built by humans. It comes from God’s creative hand.

Job sees here a living sign of power. A creature with such bones and such strength reminds human beings that they are not masters over every kind of power.

God is not telling Job that he is worthless. He is simply showing him: There are forces in My creation that you cannot control. And yet to Me they are creatures.

Behemoth Is the First of the Works of God

God calls Behemoth the first of His ways. This means that this animal is an especially impressive example of God’s creative power. Whoever sees Behemoth gets only a small glimpse of what God can do.

If even one creature is so strong, how great must the Creator be? If even one part of creation causes human beings to marvel, how immeasurable must God’s full power be?

For hearts young and old, this is an important clue: Creation does not reveal everything about God, but it points to Him. Every great wonder says: Look higher. The Creator is greater still.

Job is not being mocked through Behemoth. He is being invited to marvel and to recognize God’s greatness anew.

Behemoth Rests in Hidden Places

God describes how Behemoth lies beneath lotus plants, hidden among reeds and marshes. Shadows cover it, and willows by the stream surround it. The picture is both peaceful and powerful.

Such a strong animal does not sit on a throne and boast. It rests among the reeds, hidden in the water and shade. Its strength does not need to be loud in order to be real.

For children, we can imagine a huge animal lying almost motionless in the water. Perhaps only part of it can be seen, but you can sense: Great power is hidden here.

This too can teach Job something. Not everything powerful immediately shows itself loudly. God’s power can be hidden and yet completely real.

Behemoth Is Not Afraid of the River

God says that Behemoth does not panic when the river rises. Even if the Jordan surges toward its mouth, it remains calm. This shows its enormous strength and security.

Water can be dangerous for people. A swollen river can threaten bridges, flood roads, and frighten human beings. But Behemoth remains steady.

The animal appears made for such forces. It lives in a world where water, mud, and currents are part of its natural environment.

God shows Job again: There are creatures that live in realms human beings can barely control. But I know them. I made them.

Can Behemoth Simply Be Caught?

God asks whether Behemoth can be captured before its eyes or whether its nose can be pierced with a snare. The answer is clear: This animal is not easily overpowered.

Human beings can catch, tame, or use many animals. But Behemoth stands as a picture of a strength that escapes human control. It is not simply a tool in human hands.

For hearts young and old, we might say: Some things are so great that you cannot simply touch them, tie them up, or bring them home. You must keep your distance and marvel.

Job is to recognize: If you cannot even control a creature like Behemoth, how can you judge God’s entire government of the world?

Job Learns Humility Before the Creator

Something profound happens to Job in this chapter. He hears God’s questions, becomes silent, and places his hand over his mouth. Then God shows him once more that divine power and wisdom are greater than human strength.

Job is not shamed because his suffering did not matter. God takes Job seriously. But God leads him out of the narrow space of his own perspective into the vastness of creation.

Behemoth stands before Job like a living sign. This mighty creature says without words: The Creator is great. His works are powerful. His wisdom reaches farther than your thoughts.

For hearts young and old, this is the invitation of the chapter: We may come to God with our questions. But when God shows us His greatness, we should also learn to become quiet, to marvel, and to trust Him.

We also learn that God alone can judge the world with perfect justice. We may love justice and reject evil, but we do not have to take God’s place. The Creator who made Behemoth is strong enough to hold our lives in His hands as well.
