🌅 Devotional for the Day

Revelation 14:12 describes God’s faithful people not only as those who keep God’s commandments, but also as those who preserve the faith of Jesus. This expression is deep and precious. It speaks not only of believing in Jesus, but of a faith like the one revealed in Jesus: a trust that remains steadfast until the end.

Jesus lived on this earth in complete dependence on the Father. He sought God’s will in prayer, trusted God’s Word during temptation, and remained faithful even when the path became difficult. His faith was not superficial. It was tested in the wilderness, in His ministry, through the opposition of people, in Gethsemane, and finally on the cross.

It is especially at the cross that we see the faith of Jesus in its deepest form. Everything seemed dark. The disciples had fled, the people mocked Him, and Jesus cried out, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” Yet in the end, He entrusted Himself to the Father: “Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit.” This is faith until the end.

The three angels’ messages call God’s people to this very kind of trust. In the time of the end, faith must exist not merely as a conviction, but as a living relationship with Christ. It will not be enough to know the right words. The heart must have learned to trust God even when feelings, circumstances, or people say otherwise.

Therefore, the faith of Jesus is not a human achievement. It is a gift that Christ desires to work within us. When we connect with Him daily, His trust begins to shape our trust. His steadfastness strengthens our weakness. His surrender transforms our decisions. His focus on the Father becomes our focus as well.

✨ A Faith That Trusts in the Darkness

True faith is not revealed only when everything is bright and easy. It is shown especially when the path becomes dark and God’s guidance is not immediately understood. The faith of Jesus remained steadfast even though the path led through suffering.

Ellen G. White wrote:

“Christ held fast by faith to the Father’s love, even when He endured the darkness of separation on the cross.”

(The Desire of Ages, p. 756)

This truth gives us courage. When our own faith is weak, we may look to Jesus. He knows trial, loneliness, and pain. He can strengthen our hearts so that we do not let go.

🌿 Trust Instead of Visible Evidence

The faith of Jesus does not depend only on visible evidence. It rests on the character of God. Even when heaven is silent, God remains faithful. Even when the path is difficult to understand, His love remains true. Even when the trial lasts a long time, His promise remains sure.

Ellen G. White wrote:

“Faith means trusting God even when we do not understand His ways.”

(Steps to Christ, p. 105)

We need this kind of trust in the time of the end. Not a faith that lives only when everything is easy, but a faith that holds firmly to God’s Word when feelings fluctuate and circumstances challenge us.

🕊 Christ Works His Faith in Us

God does not require His people to produce faith by their own strength. The faith of Jesus is a gift of His presence. The more we look to Christ, the more we learn how He trusted. The more we walk with Him, the more His Spirit shapes our thinking, feelings, and decisions.

That is why daily fellowship with Jesus is so important. Prayer, God’s Word, quiet surrender, and obedience in small things prepare the heart to remain steadfast in great trials as well. Those who trust Christ today learn to trust Him tomorrow.

The final message of grace needs people who do not merely speak about faith, but who live the faith of Jesus. People who trust God when the world is shaken. People who remain faithful to His truth when others let go. People who do not rely on themselves, but on Christ, who remained faithful until the end.

🙏 Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

give me the faith of Jesus.

Help me trust You even when I do not understand everything.

Strengthen my heart when the path is dark or when my feelings fluctuate.

Teach me to build on Your Word and to hold firmly to Christ.

May the faith of Jesus shape my thoughts, my decisions, and my hope until the King comes.

Amen.

    What do you learn from Jesus’ trust on the cross?

The Call of Moses

Come now, therefore, and I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring My people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt. Exodus 3:10.
To the oppressed and suffering Hebrews the day of their deliverance seemed to be long deferred, but in His own appointed time God designed to work for them in mighty power. Moses was not to stand, as he at first anticipated, at the head of armies, with waving banners and glittering armor. That people, so long abused and oppressed, were not to gain the victory for themselves by rising up and asserting their rights. God’s purpose was to be accomplished in a way to pour contempt on human pride and glory. The deliverer was to go forth as a humble shepherd with only a rod in his hand; but God would make that rod powerful in delivering His people from oppression and in preserving them when pursued by their enemies.
Before Moses went forth, he received his high commission to his great work in a way that filled him with awe and gave him a deep sense of his own weakness and unworthiness. While engaged in his round of duties, he saw a bush, branches, foliage, and trunk, all burning, yet not consumed. He drew near to view the wonderful sight, when a voice addressed him from out of the flame. It was the voice of God. It was He who, as an angel of the covenant, had revealed Himself to the fathers in ages past. The frame of Moses quivered, he was thrilled with terror, as the Lord called him by name. With trembling lips he answered, “Here am I.” He was warned not to approach his Creator with undue familiarity: “Put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.” …
Finite creatures may learn a lesson that should never be forgotten—to approach God with reverence. We may come boldly into His presence presenting the name of Jesus, our righteousness and substitute, but never with the boldness of presumption as though He were on a level with ourselves. We have heard some address the great and all-powerful and holy God, who dwelleth in light unapproachable, as they would not address an equal or even an inferior…. God is greatly to be reverenced; wherever His presence is clearly realized, sinners will bow in the most humble attitude.—Signs of the Times, February 26, 1880.

Dear Friends,
Years ago when I was still working, I overheard one co-worker ask another co-worker who works weekends at a place where concerts and other types of shows are held. They were talking about all of the screaming teenage girls who go to a concert by their favorite singer. I remember those days when I did that.
Of course, I grew out of those schoolgirl crushes, but I worked with a woman who never did. Her whole focus was on Elvis Presley. The walls in her office were covered with photographs of him. She loved to talk about this singer whose career ended abruptly from an overdose of sleeping pills.
One time an Elvis impersonator was entertaining in the building where we worked. She made quite a spectacle of herself screaming like a schoolgirl and bowing to him. After the performance, she had this rather poor representation of the former rock star come to her office and showed him all of her memorabilia. One year she even went so far as to burn candles and offer food before a large photo of Elvis on the anniversary of his death. It was quite amazing how she literally worshiped a dead man.

Praise God! We do not worship a dead man! Our Dear Saviour is alive! “Wherefore he is able also to save [us] to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for [us].” Heb 7:25 Think of it! The very same Jesus, Who left the throne of glory, walked this earth as a man, was wounded for our transgressions and bruised for our iniquities, Who died for our sins that we might be saved is even now before God, the Father, interceding in our behalf. Wonderful Saviour!
Yet how seldom is our focus on Him Who gave Himself a ransom for us. (Matt 20:28) How rarely do we speak of His goodness. God’s Holy Word is filled with His love, yet how often we read, listen to, or watch that which edifies not. Our sins are forgiven for His name’s sake, yet we pass our years focusing on what the world has to offer. How it must amaze the unfallen beings of the universe that we think more of the mundane things of this world than we do of the King of Glory.
How our Loving Redeemer’s Great Heart of Love must break when we ignore Him or at best give Him only “lip service.” With tears in His voice, He says to us as He said to the Pharisees of old, “Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.” Matt 15:7-9
Yet, how much joy we give Him when our focus is upon Him and His great love for us. How we please Him when we speak of His blessings. Indeed, He makes a record of our words and thoughts. “Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name. And they shall be mine, saith the LORD of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him. Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.” Mal 3:16-18
Let us focus totally upon our Great Redeemer. Let our sweetest thoughts be of Him and his marvelous grace. Let us daily pray as did David, “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.” Ps 19:14

Sunday: Dissonance Between Faith and Practice

Throughout Christian history, theologians, pastors, and laypeople have studied the New Testament in order to determine what the church should look like. We marvel, for instance, at the church of Acts. But we quickly lose sight of one significant element: people have problems. It seems that we can also read the New Testament to see what the Bible says about what a church should not look like. Paul’s letters to the Corinthians are a good starting point.

Read 1 Corinthians 5:1-13. What scandalous situation does Paul describe in this passage, and why is it so disturbing?

The expression “his father’s wife” (1 Corinthians 5:1) suggests that Paul refers to the incestuous relationship between a man and his stepmother. This situation was probably reported “by those of Chloe’s household” (1 Corinthians 1:11, NKJV). Incest was reputed as such a terrible sin that it was “not tolerated even among pagans” (1 Corinthians 5:1, ESV). And yet, it is now happening in an early Christian church? Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 5:1-2 show that he is in shock at the report that a church member was doing this.

However, this bad situation gets worse. Paul is more stunned when realizing that, rather than feeling sorry about the situation, the Corinthians were even proud of themselves for tolerating such a sin (1 Corinthians 5:1-2, NIV). Thus, he intends to correct not only the immoral man but also the church for its apparent dissonance between faith and practice. In fact, Paul makes it clear constantly that the church’s indulgent attitude toward the incestuous man demanded a correction. But being proud of such a sexual scandal, and even boasting of it (1 Corinthians 5:2,6)! This was too much for Paul to bear. What was wrong with these people?

We don’t have an explanation for why the church in Corinth was so tolerant of the incestuous man. Perhaps he was a wealthy member from whom the church benefited? Or, maybe, because “all things are lawful” (1 Corinthians 6:12), they didn’t deem it the way that they should have. We just don’t know.

Whatever the true reasons, they became blind to a flagrant violation of the Scriptures (Leviticus 18:7-8). And they were even proud of it.

What things are clearly condemned in Scripture that we, as a church, are in danger of tolerating, all in the name of “love” and “acceptance”?
