6.3 “A More Excellent Way”

Love as the Heart and Standard of All Spiritual Gifts

1. Introduction

In the midst of the discussion about spiritual gifts, Paul directs the church in Corinth toward a higher standard: love. The Corinthians were impressed by spectacular gifts, but Paul shows that even the greatest gifts remain empty without love. A person may speak, possess knowledge, believe, serve, and even make great sacrifices—and yet all of it can lose its spiritual value when love is absent. Love is therefore not simply one gift among others, but the way in which every gift is to be used properly. Spiritual gifts are not meant to exalt people, but to make Christ visible and build others up. The more excellent way is therefore the way of love.

2. The Biblical Foundation

Paul writes:

“Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.” 1 Corinthians 13:1

“And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.” 1 Corinthians 13:2

“Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up.” 1 Corinthians 13:4

“And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” 1 Corinthians 13:13

3. Connection to Our Time

Spiritual gifts can still be misused today when they are not guided by love. A person may preach, teach, sing, organize, or lead well and yet hurt others when humility and love are missing. Churches may have many programs, ministries, and activities, but without love they become cold and burdensome. Paul reminds us that spiritual value is measured not only by what is done, but also by the spirit in which it is done. Love makes ministry warm, healing, and Christlike. Where love is absent, even good gifts can become instruments of pride, competition, or division.

4. Central Message of the Lesson

Spiritual gifts fulfill their true purpose only through love, because love directs every gift toward Christ, the building up of the church, and the well-being of others.

5. Theological Focus

The central theological focus of this lesson is that love is God’s standard for all spiritual gifts. Paul does not place 1 Corinthians 13 between chapters 12 and 14 by accident. In chapter 12, he speaks about the diversity of gifts; in chapter 14, he speaks about order and intelligibility in worship. Between them, he places love because it is the heart of the proper use of every gift.

Paul does not say that spiritual gifts are unimportant. They are gifts from God to his church. Yet a gift can lose its spiritual purpose when it is used without love. The gift itself may be genuine, but its use can become wrong, proud, or hurtful.

Paul therefore gives several remarkable examples: speaking in tongues, prophecy, knowledge, faith, and self-sacrifice. These are not small things. They are abilities and actions that can deeply impress people. Yet Paul says: Without love, I am nothing.

This is a serious truth. A ministry may appear great before human beings, but God does not look only at its outward effect. People see the gift; God sees the heart. People hear words; God examines motives. People admire achievement; God asks whether there is love.

Love is therefore not merely a feeling. Paul describes it through concrete attitudes: patience, kindness, humility, truthfulness, forgiveness, hope, and endurance. Love is revealed especially when people are difficult, when recognition is absent, or when conflicts arise.

This is decisive in the context of spiritual gifts. A person who possesses a gift may be tempted to exalt himself. He may seek recognition, react sensitively, or look down on others. It is precisely there that one can see whether the gift is truly shaped by the Spirit of Christ.

Without love, knowledge can become harsh. Without love, prophecy can become hurtful. Without love, leadership can become controlling. Without love, music can become self-promotion. Without love, service can produce bitterness. Without love, even sacrifice can become a source of pride.

Paul also makes clear that love is not opposed to truth. Love does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. Biblical love is therefore not indifference toward sin. It unites truth with patience, clarity with mercy, and correction with the goal of restoration.

The theological core is this: God’s nature is love, and therefore God’s gifts must be used in the spirit of his love. The Holy Spirit gives not only abilities, but also desires to transform the heart. A gift is used in a truly spiritual way only when it reflects the character of Christ.

6. Spiritual Deepening

This lesson leads us into honest self-examination. It is possible to be active in ministry and yet become unloving inwardly. It is possible to do much for God while acting harshly, irritably, proudly, or impatiently. Paul therefore calls us not first to greater activity, but to a heart filled with God’s love.

The Corinthians needed this reminder because they apparently viewed spiritual gifts as signs of spiritual superiority. Some wanted to appear visible, important, and impressive. Paul shows them that true spirituality is recognized not first by how spectacular a gift is, but by the love with which it is exercised.

This remains highly relevant for us. In churches, people sometimes quickly ask who is gifted, visible, influential, or especially capable. But God asks deeper questions: Is this person patient? Is he kind? Does he build others up? Does he rejoice in the truth? Does he serve out of love or from a desire for recognition?

Love is the more excellent way because it removes the ego from the center. It does not seek its own. This means that love frees ministry from selfishness. It does not ask, “How do I appear?” but, “How can Christ become visible?” It does not ask, “What will I receive?” but, “How can the other person be blessed?”

This is difficult because our hearts often seek recognition. We want to be seen, appreciated, and affirmed. When this does not happen, we can become hurt, bitter, or envious. Paul shows that love acts differently. It serves even when no one applauds. It remains kind even when it is overlooked. It rejoices when others are used by God.

Love is also patient with the weak. In the church, people have different levels of maturity, backgrounds, and wounds. Without love, these differences become burdensome. With love, they become a space in which growth can take place. Love gives people time without abandoning the truth.

Yet love does not mean approving everything. Paul states clearly that love does not rejoice in wrongdoing. True love may also admonish. But it does so not from pride or harshness, but with the desire to lead the other person back to Christ.

We cannot produce this love from within ourselves. It is the fruit of the Holy Spirit. We may make an effort to be kind, but divine love requires a renewed heart. This lesson therefore leads us into prayer: Lord, fill me with your love so that my gifts do not remain empty.

When we receive God’s love, our view of others changes. We no longer see them as competitors, burdens, or an audience, but as people for whom Christ died. Then our words become more careful, our correction more humble, our service warmer, and our gifts more healing.

Love makes the church a safe place. Not a perfect place, but a healing one. There, people can grow because they are not only judged, but also supported. There, gifts can flourish because no one must constantly fear being overlooked or despised.

Love is therefore not an addition to ministry. It is the heart of ministry. Without love, a gift may be loud, visible, and impressive, yet remain spiritually empty. With love, even a small and quiet act of service can have great value before God.

7. Application in Everyday Life

Practical Steps:

• Examine not only your gift, but also your motive.
• Ask God daily for a heart shaped by his love.
• Practice patience with people who think differently or grow more slowly.
• Continue serving faithfully even when you receive little recognition.
• Avoid envy when God uses others in visible ways.
• Always unite truth with humility and mercy.
• Do not use your gift for self-promotion, but to build others up.
• Before every act of service, ask: Will Christ become visible through this?

Which gift, responsibility, or strength in my life needs more love, patience, and humility so that it may truly serve Christ?

Paul shows the Corinthians that there is a more excellent way than pride, comparison, and self-promotion. This more excellent way is love. Without love, even impressive gifts lose their spiritual value. With love, however, gifts become instruments of comfort, edification, truth, and healing. Love turns the focus away from personal glory and toward Christ and one’s neighbor. The most important question is therefore not only which gift I possess, but whether that gift is carried by the Spirit of love.

God’s Wisdom in Creation

Introduction

God continues his address to Job and once again directs his attention to the animal world. Through various animals, he shows how perfectly his wisdom is revealed in creation. Every living creature possesses abilities, instincts, and purposes that human beings can neither create nor fully explain. Job chapter 39 invites us to recognize God’s care and wisdom in the lives of his creatures.

Commentary

God begins with the mountain goats and the deer. He asks Job whether he knows when they give birth or whether he can bring forth their young. Even these hidden processes in nature remain under God’s attentive care. What is concealed from human beings does not escape the Creator’s notice.

God then speaks about the wild donkey. This animal loves freedom and cannot be tamed. It lives beyond human control and moves confidently through the wilderness. God has given it its habitat and its particular characteristics.

Next, God mentions the wild ox. Despite its great strength, human beings cannot simply harness it for their work or depend upon its reliability. Its strength comes from God and is not subject to human plans.

The description of the ostrich is especially striking. At first glance, it appears to act without wisdom because it leaves its eggs in the sand. Yet God has given it extraordinary abilities. When it runs, it can outrun both horse and rider. The Creator distributes his gifts according to his own wisdom.

Attention then turns to the horse. In poetic language, God describes its strength, courage, and fearlessness in battle. The horse charges toward the battlefield without retreating from the noise of weapons. This strength, too, is a gift from the Creator.

Finally, God speaks about the hawk and the eagle. They rise high into the sky, build their nests upon inaccessible cliffs, and detect their prey from a great distance. Their astonishing abilities are an expression of divine wisdom and care.

All these examples have the same purpose: Job is to recognize that God’s wisdom permeates the entire universe. If God created and provides for every animal with such perfection, Job may trust that his own life is also held in God’s hands—even when he does not yet understand God’s ways.

Job chapter 39 reminds us that creation speaks daily of God’s wisdom. The Lord rules not only over the great events of world history, but also cares for every individual creature. His care is all-encompassing, and his wisdom is without limit.

Job 39 describes various animals and their extraordinary characteristics. Through them, God reveals his wisdom, power, and care in creation. Human beings recognize their own limitations and are invited to place renewed trust in the Creator.

Message for Us Today

Nature is a living testimony to God’s wisdom. If the Lord cares for mountain goats, wild donkeys, eagles, and every other creature, he will not forget his children. Our trust grows when we learn to recognize God’s hand not only in extraordinary miracles, but also in the daily wonders of his creation.

Devotional for the Day

Jesus describes the attitude of his waiting children with a simple yet powerful image: girded waists and burning lamps. In biblical times, a girded garment signified readiness. A person was prepared to set out, serve, or take action. A burning lamp represented watchfulness during the night. No one was to fall asleep while waiting for the master.

This image speaks directly to our spiritual lives. Being ready for the return of Jesus does not mean looking passively toward the future. It means living watchfully today. It means not allowing the heart to fall asleep, not allowing love for Christ to grow cold, and not allowing the light of faith to go out.

Watchfulness is more than observing outward signs. It begins in the heart. A watchful person asks: What is the condition of my relationship with Jesus? Is my light still burning? Is my faith alive, or has it become merely a habit? Am I living consciously in God’s presence, or am I being carried along by everyday life, worries, and distractions?

Sanctification and character development require this spiritual watchfulness. Character is shaped not only by major decisions, but also by many small moments. When we become careless, indifference, superficiality, and compromise can easily creep in. But when we remain watchful, we recognize God’s voice, examine our hearts, and allow Christ to shape us anew each day.

Jesus does not call us to nervous fear, but to watchful faithfulness. Our lamps should burn because we love the Lord. Our hearts should be ready because we are waiting for his call. Our lives should remain bright because the world needs Christ. The coming King desires to find a people who are not asleep, but who are waiting for him with burning faith, living hope, and a Christlike character.

Watchfulness Keeps the Heart Alive

Spiritual weariness often begins quietly. A person prays less, reads God’s Word more superficially, becomes accustomed to small compromises, and does not immediately notice that the inner light is growing dimmer. That is why Jesus calls his children to watchfulness.

Ellen G. White wrote:

“Only those who are becoming more like Christ will be able to stand when he appears.”

(Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 413)

Christlikeness does not grow in spiritual drowsiness. It grows where the heart remains awake, open to God’s voice, and willing to be changed by him each day.

Keeping the Light Burning

A burning lamp needs care. It must not be neglected. In the same way, our spiritual lives need daily nourishment: prayer, God’s Word, fellowship with Christ, obedience in everyday life, and a willingness to allow the Holy Spirit to work.

Ellen G. White wrote:

“We must have a living connection with Christ each day; only then can our light shine brightly.”

(Steps to Christ, p. 69)

Our light does not burn through our own strength. Christ himself is the source. When we remain with him, our faith is nourished, our hope is renewed, and our character is strengthened.

Ready in Ordinary Life

Readiness is not revealed only in special spiritual moments. It is revealed in ordinary daily life: in the way we speak, in the patience we show, in the honesty we practice, in the purity of our thoughts, and in our faithfulness when no one is watching. It is there that our light shines visibly or begins to grow dim.

Jesus wants his children not merely to speak about his coming, but to live as though he could come today. This does not mean neglecting our daily responsibilities. On the contrary, those who wait for Jesus live more responsibly, lovingly, and intentionally.

Watchfulness means: I want to be ready, not someday, but today. I do not want to allow the world to lull my heart to sleep. I want to remain close to Christ so that my light will still be burning when the King comes.

Prayer

Dear Father in heaven,

help me to remain spiritually awake.

Protect me from indifference, distraction, and inner weariness.

Let my light keep burning through daily fellowship with Christ.

Shape my character through the small decisions of everyday life.

Prepare me to meet Jesus with joy, trust, and a watchful heart.

Amen.
