God again gives specific instruction to Israel not to make molten images and to destroy the altars, images, and cut down the groves where these idols were worshiped. These injunctions were not always followed. Eventually, idolsβ―were actually placed in the temple of Jerusalem by King Manasseh of Judah in the seventh century BC. The cult ofβ―"asherah"β― worship was very prevalent at that time, according to the archaeological record of the excavation of hundreds of clay goddesses. Certainly God knew what a temptation these images would be for Israel. How is it today in our lives?β― If time should last, what would archaeologists say about us thousands ofβ―years from now when they excavate our homes? How would they interpret the black TV screens situated on the walls of our living rooms and bedrooms with furniture strategically facing them? Will they interpret these as objects of worship? How much time do we spend with God’s Word every day in comparison with the other distractions of life? God’s words found in this chapter are still true for us. “For the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.” He longs to beβ―our all in all! Michael Hasel

Have you ever felt utterly separated from God after falling away from Him? The beauty of this chapter is that, notwithstanding the seriousness of the golden calf idolatry, God honors His servant Moses– “for you have found grace in My sight, and I know you by name.” What a gracious God we serve! Moses longs to have even further confirmation of God’s promise and reassurance that God would be with Him and so he pleads, “Show me your glory.” No fallen man can stand in the presence of God face to face, but mutual respect and Moses' purity of heart at this moment brought the Creature and creator together. Do you want to feel God’s intimate presence in your life today? Put away all sin that might separate you from Him and ask Him to make Himself evident in your life. The same God who passed before Moses as he was hid in the cleft of a rock can reveal Himself to you. He is the same gracious Jesus who came to save you from your sins. Michael Hasel

The golden calf could have represented any number of Egyptian deities. The Apis bull was worshiped in Memphis as Ptah, the god of life. Hathor, the cow goddess, was worshiped in Thebes as goddess of motherhood, beauty, love, and joy. In Exodus 32 the people “rose up to play” which had clear sexual overtones and might be equated with Hathor. Aaron, their spiritual leader, gave in to their requests and to justify their worship announced a “feast to the Lord.” This mixed worship led God to disown the Hebrews as He refers to them as “your people.” But as God rejects the people who chose the calf rather than Him, Moses steps in and asks that his name be blotted from the book of life. So great was Moses’ love for his people that he offered his life for theirs. But there is only one substitutionary death acceptable to God and that is the death of His Son Jesus. Have you tried in your life to compromise the world and its practices with your worship of God? Here we see the consequences of such action. God would have a people that are faithful to Him, and Him only, though the heavens fall (Education, 57). Michael Hasel
