In later Israelite practice the instructions regarding the sacrificial offerings were disregarded, prompting Malachi to warn the priests of their neglect before God. At that time lame, blind and sick animals were accepted by the priests and sacrificed for the people (Mal 1:7-8). God responds by saying, “Why not offer it to your governor. Would he be pleased with you?” (Mal 1: 8). In this God reminds the priests of their responsibility before God and His people. They are to provide “true instruction” and walk with God “in peace and righteousness” for the lips of the priests are to preserve knowledge (Mal 2:6-7). The priests were to uphold the rites and instructions of the sacrificial system before the Israelites until the Lamb to which these sacrifices pointed would come. There are grave lessons for us today as pastors and leaders in our churches to ever lift up God’s instructions regarding true worship before our people. How tempting it is for us today to become lax in our responsibilities! God desires obedience in respect to His ordinances. So let us approach Him with the awe and respect described in this chapter. Aaron and his sons were to represent the people before the Lord. As God is most holy, only the priesthood and Moses could approach God within the courtyard of the sanctuary. Their garments were exquisitely made “for glory,” not to puff them up, but to accentuate and elevate their office before the people. The priestly garments were made to harmonize with the elaborate, beautiful tapestries of the sanctuary. Their garments also represented the desire that God has for each of His people to harmonize their inner selves with the character of the sanctuary and with the God that it represented. The breast plate worn by the high priest was known as the “breastplate of judgment” because it bore the Urim and Thummim through which God communicated His will. The breastplate carried twelve jems bearing the names of the twelve tribes of Israel. There is great significance in God’s remembrance of His people whom he regards as His precious gems. His church is as a bride adorned “with jewels” (Isa 61:10) and considered His treasure. Did you know you were a prized treasure, precious in the sight of the Lord? Michael Hasel

As the sanctuary represented the plan of salvation, every piece of furniture had significance and symbolism. The altar of burnt offering with the blood that was shed from sacrifices represented the gospel truth of the atonement for sin through the substitutionary death of Jesus Christ on the cross (Isa 53:4-7; Eph 1:5-7). It stood at the entrance to the tabernacle representing the need of the sinner to be cleansed from sin before entering into worship before the presence of God. The horns of the altar represented strength and power. David referred to “the horns of my salvation” (2 Sam 22:3; Ps 18:2). The olive oil for the menorah, the seven-branched candlestick, represented the purity of the Holy Spirit (Zech 4:2-6). The lamps were to burn continuously, representing the “true light” and “light of men,” Jesus Christ (John 1:4-9). The Israelites were to be an extension of His light to the world. We, too, today have been given that privileged position to share God’s Word with the world around us. Are we sharing that gospel message or are we keeping it to ourselves? Jesus desires that we spread His message of life to illuminate a dying world. Michael Hasel

"Genesis 1 sets the tone for the entire Bible. It establishes the fact that God is the Creator of the heavens and the earth. In the Bible’s first chapter, God is revealed as Creator thirty-one times. There are three significant expressions to watch for in Genesis 1. They are “God said”, “God created”, and “God saw that it was good.” These expressions are full of meaning for our lives today. When God speaks, He creates. What God says is so even if it were never so before because when God says it, it becomes so. God’s spoken word is reality and the result of accepting what God says is “good.” God’s Word is a living, creative Word. When we believe what God said because of our confidence in the One who said it, the living, creative Word transforms our lives. All of the creative power which brought worlds into existence is in the Word of God. Are there ways which the Bible has spoken to your heart? Why not share them on the blog?"

The term tabernacle, mishkan, is related to the term shekinah, the glorious presence of God that was to fill the tabernacle, where God would dwell among His people. The exquisite details provided for the building of the sanctuary indicate the importance God places on worship and on knowing His plan of salvation. The curtains were to be made of fine woven linen, with artistic designs made from blue, purple, and scarlet thread. The veil was to divide the holy from the most holy place. All the dimensions were to be carefully followed. This is an example to us of how important worship is to our Creator. When we come to worship our focus should be on Him. Today much of our worship tends to focus on ourselves and how we feel. But this is very different from the God-centered experience described in Exodus. How is it in our lives today? When we approach God for worship do we come clean, wearing our best, to worship Him in honor and in truth? The sanctuary was to be a teaching lesson for Israel as the salvation acts of God were revealed to them. Michael Hasel
