Exodus 40 holds clues to the kind of person God can use in His work. Imagine having so close a relationship with God that He could give you such specific and detailed instructions as those recorded in this chapter. Moses carefully recorded the instructions, complete with a due date (verses 1-15), and then carried them out in every detail right on time (verses 16-34). Order and cleanliness were carefully observed by Moses and Aaron, illustrating their deep respect for the sacredness of the tabernacle and the tasks associated with it (verses 31, 32). God blessed this faithful attention to detail with a visible sign of His presence – a cloud so thick that Moses “was not able to enter the tent of the congregation.”
Moses and all the children of Israel were so focused on following God’s will that they did not move without evidence that God was leading, but as soon as the cloud lifted, signaling it was time to move, the “children of Israel went onward.” And God was with them night and day “throughout all their journeys.” May God help us be this focused and faithful. We are given a glimpse of Aaron ministering before God for the Israelites. What is striking is the specific instructions that God gave for the construction of the priest’s garment. The intricacy of the strange garment with royal colors– gold, blue, purple and scarlet, the specificity of the placement of Urim and Thummim and each stone on the breast plate shows that God places high significance on the priest’s work. Aaron had to be without sin while wearing this attire in the sanctuary. Thus the crown was engraved “Holiness to the Lord.” Aaron served as an example. The service was a shadow of the heavenly sanctuary service where the sinless Jesus is ministering. The garment Aaron was instructed to wear was a symbol of intercession. Aaron wore the ephod with the twelve stones on his breast to bear the names of the children of Israel. Jesus our High Priest, the antitype, is in the heavenly sanctuary bearing the names of His beloved children and interceding for the penitent sinners before His Father, We have the assurance that Jesus will never forget us if we fix our eyes on Him while He ministers in the heavenly sanctuary. As Bezaleel crafted the altar of burnt offering, following God’s detailed blueprint, I wonder if he understood the significance of that beautiful piece of furniture. I wonder how many members of the human race, before and since Bezaleel, have fully grasped what God was trying to say to us when he instituted the building of altars. For generations before the Israelites became a nation, God’s people had been worshipping at altars. For all those years, God had been dissolving the distance between earth and heaven with tongues of fire that came flashing down to consume the offering. It was constant physical evidence that God wanted to reach across the separation caused by sin, that earth and heaven were not unrelated worlds, but that they were in contact with and affected by each other. The altars built of stone, the altar made by Bezaleel, and all the altars that would come afterward, were a chain of promise. They were a pledge from God that when Jesus died as a lamb brought to the slaughter, the breach in our relationship with God would be eternally healed.
