"Genesis 1 sets the tone for the entire Bible. It establishes the fact that God is the Creator of the heavens and the earth. In the Bible’s first chapter, God is revealed as Creator thirty-one times. There are three significant expressions to watch for in Genesis 1. They are “God said”, “God created”, and “God saw that it was good.” These expressions are full of meaning for our lives today. When God speaks, He creates. What God says is so even if it were never so before because when God says it, it becomes so. God’s spoken word is reality and the result of accepting what God says is “good.” God’s Word is a living, creative Word. When we believe what God said because of our confidence in the One who said it, the living, creative Word transforms our lives. All of the creative power which brought worlds into existence is in the Word of God. Are there ways which the Bible has spoken to your heart? Why not share them on the blog?"

The term tabernacle, mishkan, is related to the term shekinah, the glorious presence of God that was to fill the tabernacle, where God would dwell among His people. The exquisite details provided for the building of the sanctuary indicate the importance God places on worship and on knowing His plan of salvation. The curtains were to be made of fine woven linen, with artistic designs made from blue, purple, and scarlet thread. The veil was to divide the holy from the most holy place. All the dimensions were to be carefully followed. This is an example to us of how important worship is to our Creator. When we come to worship our focus should be on Him. Today much of our worship tends to focus on ourselves and how we feel. But this is very different from the God-centered experience described in Exodus. How is it in our lives today? When we approach God for worship do we come clean, wearing our best, to worship Him in honor and in truth? The sanctuary was to be a teaching lesson for Israel as the salvation acts of God were revealed to them. Michael Hasel

In this chapter, God requests His people to make an offering from the plunder that Israel had received from the Egyptians. These gifts were to come from the heart of the people, given freely and willingly, from the best that they had. The Israelites gave generously so that they might have a place where God could dwell and where they could come in contact with the divine. Are you giving the best that you have to the Lord– your resources, time, and strength? While the people were to build the wilderness tabernacle, it was designed “after the pattern” that God showed them. This tabernacle on earth was a “pattern” of “heavenly things” (Heb 9:23, 24). It was designed as a “copy of the great original” in heaven (GC 414; Heb 8:2). Here in the earthly tabernacle the people were taught the truths relating to Christ’s sacrifice and the final end to the controversy between Christ and Satan. We serve a God who has always desired to reveal His plan of redemption to His people. We can be eternally grateful that we worship a living God who today continues as our Advocate, Savior, and Judge in the true sanctuary in heaven. Michael Hasel

Moses wrote all the words of the Lord which became the book of the covenant. This is the first “book” mentioned as being written, although earlier in Exod 17:14 Moses is instructed by God to write the events surrounding Rephidim and the attack of the Amalekites. How was this done and what script was used? The fact that the alphabet had been introduced for the first time in Sinai Peninsula around 1600-1550 BC gave Moses access to the latest development in writing. The proto-Sinaitic alphabet was a breakthrough in written communication that could be equivalent to the invention of the printing press or the internet. Moses could, in fact, have written the first five books of the Bible during this time. Because of this unique language innovation, the timing for God to put His covenant in writing could not have been better. Moses is invited to come up to the mountain of God to represent His people. God’s glory today rests in His sanctuary as Jesus intercedes for us. We are invited to bring our petitions to Him so that Jesus, our divine intercessor, may receive for us that which God has promised. Michael Hasel

Have you ever felt you are not talented enough to work for the Lord? You may reason that because you don’t have pastoral training or haven’t learned to preach that your efforts are not needed or won’t be of any use. Nothing could be further from the truth. I like to think that one reason God created two humans at creation (other than for procreation) is because one person alone cannot fully display God’s character to the universe. God started with two representatives and He has been using people for this purpose ever since. In these last days, the character of God will be best represented by His people, the church. The Bible speaks of the church as the body of Christ, a holy temple that is built of many members. Again, it takes many people of varying talents to fully represent Christ. Sometimes a preacher is needed. At other times, a plumber can “minister” to someone in need. No one wants to hear a sermon when their sewer is backed up, but they will believe a plumber committed to serving others honestly to be just the miracle they needed. What talents do you have? Are you using them to serve the Lord? Ask God how you can show Jesus to others as you use the talents He has given you. “The Lord has a place for every one in His great plan. Talents that are not needed are not bestowed.”—Testimonies for the Church 9:37. ChS 99.3 Karen D.
