β€οΈ Jump to Weekly Spirit of Prophecy Reading https://www.revivalandreformation.org/bhp/en/sop/chs/10a COMMENTARY House-to-house work is such a privilege! Now that the Covid-19 pandemic is easing, we have a window of opportunity to meet the families that live in our towns and cities. For our close neighbors, we can take some baked goods and a gospel tract or brochure, or an invitation to join a small Bible study group. Sometimes we ask if they have a special request or concern for which we can pray together. I've also taken out the youth to go two by two conducting a simple survey at homes street by street. At the end, we say, "Thank you for taking our community survey. We'd like to share the first two lessons of a Bible study guide many are enjoying. Next week we'll stop by and bring you the next two lessons, and see if you have any questions." If the people accept the lessons, we write down their address and make sure we show up the next week. Other ways to visit folks in their homes, or at least at their door, are following up on literature evangelism contacts, Vacation Bible School contacts, cooking school or evangelistic meeting contacts, and people who once attended the Seventh-day Adventist church but have ceased coming. "The harvest is ripe but the laborers are few." Let's be sure that by God's grace we are part of the solution, not part of the problem! Cindy Tutsch Associate Director (retired), Ellen G. Prayer is the way God invites us to communicate directly with Him. The altar of incense was a symbol of the prayers of the people that ever ascend before the throne of God. The priests came to the holy place to offer incense (Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 333) which rose over the veil into the most holy place where God’s throne was located above the mercy seat. The incense represented the “prayers of the saints” (Rev 8:3-4). We may “pray without ceasing” (1 Thess 5:17) knowing that Jesus stands as our high priest before the throne of God. “Christ mingles with [our prayers] the merits of His own life of perfect obedience. Our prayers are made fragrant by this incense. Christ has pledged Himself to intercede in our behalf, and the Father always hears the Son.” (Sons and Daughters of God, p.22). Thus our prayers bring us into the very presence of God and are joined with those of Christ, our High Priest. This is good news for all today – we need no earthly intercessor, but we all have equal access to the power of the Creator of the Universe who has promised that He “will hear us” (1 Jn 5:14). In later Israelite practice the instructions regarding the sacrificial offerings were disregarded, prompting Malachi to warn the priests of their neglect before God. At that time lame, blind and sick animals were accepted by the priests and sacrificed for the people (Mal 1:7-8). God responds by saying, “Why not offer it to your governor. Would he be pleased with you?” (Mal 1: 8). In this God reminds the priests of their responsibility before God and His people. They are to provide “true instruction” and walk with God “in peace and righteousness” for the lips of the priests are to preserve knowledge (Mal 2:6-7). The priests were to uphold the rites and instructions of the sacrificial system before the Israelites until the Lamb to which these sacrifices pointed would come. There are grave lessons for us today as pastors and leaders in our churches to ever lift up God’s instructions regarding true worship before our people. How tempting it is for us today to become lax in our responsibilities! God desires obedience in respect to His ordinances. So let us approach Him with the awe and respect described in this chapter. Aaron and his sons were to represent the people before the Lord. As God is most holy, only the priesthood and Moses could approach God within the courtyard of the sanctuary. Their garments were exquisitely made “for glory,” not to puff them up, but to accentuate and elevate their office before the people. The priestly garments were made to harmonize with the elaborate, beautiful tapestries of the sanctuary. Their garments also represented the desire that God has for each of His people to harmonize their inner selves with the character of the sanctuary and with the God that it represented. The breast plate worn by the high priest was known as the “breastplate of judgment” because it bore the Urim and Thummim through which God communicated His will. The breastplate carried twelve jems bearing the names of the twelve tribes of Israel. There is great significance in God’s remembrance of His people whom he regards as His precious gems. His church is as a bride adorned “with jewels” (Isa 61:10) and considered His treasure. Did you know you were a prized treasure, precious in the sight of the Lord? Michael Hasel

As the sanctuary represented the plan of salvation, every piece of furniture had significance and symbolism. The altar of burnt offering with the blood that was shed from sacrifices represented the gospel truth of the atonement for sin through the substitutionary death of Jesus Christ on the cross (Isa 53:4-7; Eph 1:5-7). It stood at the entrance to the tabernacle representing the need of the sinner to be cleansed from sin before entering into worship before the presence of God. The horns of the altar represented strength and power. David referred to “the horns of my salvation” (2 Sam 22:3; Ps 18:2). The olive oil for the menorah, the seven-branched candlestick, represented the purity of the Holy Spirit (Zech 4:2-6). The lamps were to burn continuously, representing the “true light” and “light of men,” Jesus Christ (John 1:4-9). The Israelites were to be an extension of His light to the world. We, too, today have been given that privileged position to share God’s Word with the world around us. Are we sharing that gospel message or are we keeping it to ourselves? Jesus desires that we spread His message of life to illuminate a dying world. Michael Hasel
