There are experiences in life that touch us to the core, and the ongoing saga of the former rebels of Mindoro, Philippines, is one of them. The greatest battle they ever fought was a spiritual one—the battle for their hearts. And the spectacular victory that followed was a triumph of God’s love overcoming hatred and hostility. Below is a short video where I interview the former leader of the rebel forces and his wife, alongside the military secret service agent who pursued them relentlessly. But that’s all in the past, because now they’re fully reconciled, recently baptized—and no longer enemies but friends! And they’re actively training to become evangelists! There are prayers that God always delights in answering. One is the prayer for the salvation of others. Exactly 30 years ago, I was pastoring a church in the small town of Pendleton, Oregon—population 14,000. It was the year the Harris Pine factory shut down—and with it, most of the town. It’s also the year we prayed, “Give us 92 souls for ’92.” Impossible for such a small community—but we baptized 93! In 2016, we held evangelistic meetings throughout Rwanda, and the church prayed, “Give us 100,000 souls!” Again, an impossible prayer, but by the time the meetings were over, more than 100,000 had been baptized! But this last one tops them all: Remember the amazing story of the 700 communist rebels baptized last month on the island of Mindoro, Philippines? They prayed that “each one win one” and pledged 700 new souls for 2022—and you’ll never guess what we just learned: they have already met their goal! This Sabbath, most of the world celebrates Christmas, "the happiest time of the year.” And while happiness may not be a part of those experiencing sorrow right now, we can all rejoice in the knowledge that Heaven sent us a Savior, and He will one day make all things right! That is the plan of salvation in a nutshell—Heaven sent fallen man a Savior who is coming back soon! It’s the message Adventist World Radio beams daily around the world, and it’s the message that transformed the rebels on the island of Mindoro, Philippines. When the communist rebels and assassins understood that there was hope and forgiveness for them, their joy knew no bounds. They gladly abandoned their former life and embraced their Savior, Jesus. I’ve just returned from the most amazing experience of my life in the front lines of evangelism! As many of you know, five years ago, AWR launched a new radio station on the island of Mindoro, Philippines. Our plan was to cover the whole island with the full, no-holds-barred Adventist message. We felt a miracle was taking place when village after village began calling the station to request baptism—they wanted to become Seventh-day Adventists! Massive baptisms followed as thousands gave their lives to Jesus. We were overjoyed and thought our job was done on that island. But unbeknownst to us, there were communist assassin rebel groups deep in the mountains listening to the programs! For 50 years they had been waging war against the government to overthrow the current system. Then one day, two years ago, the top rebel leaders contacted our station. They, too, had been listening and wanted to give their hearts to Jesus. The rest is history, and just two weeks ago, we flew to Mindoro to witness their baptism. Hundreds of rebels—including the top generals—gave their lives to Jesus. But that’s not all, because in that baptismal group were several military leaders who have been working with us to reintegrate the rebels into society. They listened to the messages, witnessed the transformations and were moved to also take a stand!
