Located in northwest Puerto Rico, the massive Arecibo radio telescope is situated in a natural limestone sinkhole and covers about 20 acres. Built in the early 1960s and updated over the years, the spherical dish measures 1,000 feet across and consists of nearly 40,000 three by six-foot aluminum panels which can be adjusted individually, creating a high-precision surface that listens in on our amazing universe.
