Nobody attending Avondale with Graham Barnett could forget the brash and distressingly voluble boy from Kingaroy, Queensland. Few would have believed the same lad, now a recipient of a posthumous citation from the Class of 1968 at Homecoming 2018, could become a renowned missionary and administrator who faithfully followed God’s leading.

The pastoral and mission minister

Having completed the ministerial course, Pr Errol Wright left Avondale believing if God wanted him in the ministry, He would show the way, and He did. The Class of 1958 is now citing Errol at Homecoming 2018 for following God’s leading into pastoral and mission ministry.

Earle Rogers thought his calling might be in ministry but felt “more inclined towards the accounting side of things.” This led to a 25-year tenure at NRMA and now a citation for service from the 1948 honour year at Homecoming 2018.

Pr André van Rensburg still feels the call to the local church. With almost 40 years of pastoral experience at 19 churches in two countries, the citation recipient for the 1977 honour year at Homecoming 2017 describes sharing the joys and heartaches of his church family as “the greatest honour.”

Making maths an adventure in learning

For the record, Graeme Harris is a mathematics teacher, “but I don’t want to be remembered as just a mathematics teacher.” The citation recipient for the 1987 honour year at Homecoming 2017 want to be remembered “as someone who loves mathematics, who has a sense of humour and who’s willing to help students see challenging concepts as understandable and relevant.”
