Emotionally Charged

November 19, 2009 By admin

“We are not just rationale people who respond emotionally once in a while. We are emotional people who respond rationally once in a while.”

–Clarence Schilt, Oregon pastor

We are more emotional than we are rationale. Some are more analytical than others, but in the end everything that happens to us impacts us on an emotional level. As I think back over my life, the experiences I most vividly remember are those that touched my emotions. The rationale decisions I made years ago don’t stand out in my mind. That doesn’t mean they weren’t significant, but they were on a level that didn’t seem as personal.

About eighteen years ago I reached a place in my pastoral work where I felt the need to be stretched. I needed to be challenged in new ways. Some would call it a mid-life crisis! After twelve turbulent, at times tearful, months of trying to figure out what to do, Linda and I finally decided that I would take a leave of absence and head to graduate school. Out of that emotional time we made some rationale decisions that altered the course of our lives. Looking back now I can say it was an exciting time.

It’s OK to be emotional. We are wired that way. Ask God to help you better understand and celebrate the emotional aspects of your life today.

For How Long?

October 17, 2009 By admin

“If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap. If you want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune, If you want happiness for a lifetime, help somebody.”

–Chinese Proverb

When happiness is tied to things or experiences, it eventually fades away. New cars break down, vacations come to an end, and life moves on. Much of what drives the human spirit in its pursuits and achievements is based on passing whims and desires. If we could only see life through God’s eyes.

From time to time we catch a glimpse of the passion that lights God’s heart when someone embarks on a mission to make the world a better place by giving their time, effort and means to cure diseases, help orphans, lift broken spirits, win peace, fight poverty, and share the gospel of Jesus!

Isn’t it wonderful that when we seek to bless others our own happiness is increased.

What’s Your Passion?

September 21, 2009 By admin

“You cannot motivate the best people with money. Money is just a way to keep score. The best people in any field are motivated by passion.”

–Eric S. Raymond

Getting excited about something is not necessarily the same as being passionate about it. Someone can get excited about playing golf on a sunday afternoon, but Tiger Woods is truly passionate about it. Having passion about something means that your interest is more than casual. You give it your undivided attention!

What are you passionate about? What is it that excites your creativity and motivates you to take action? Ask God to help you find your calling in life, then do something each day to make it a reality.

Guard Your Heart

August 14, 2009 By admin

“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life. Avoid all perverse talk; stay away from corrupt speech. Look straight ahead and fix your eyes before you. Mark out a straight path for your feet, stay on the safe path. Don’t get sidetracked; keep your feet from following evil.”

–Proverbs 4:23-27 (NLT)

The reason we need to guard our hearts is because they are where corruption and evil take hold and spoil our lives. Corruption is not an external thing–it’s internal. On one occasion Jesus told His disciples, “From the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander. These are what defile you.” (Matthew 15: 18-20).

We’re pretty lax when it comes to deciding who, or what gets into our hearts. Too often we allow our senses to be taken captive by sights and sounds that are designed to penetrate our defenses with seeds of corruption. The safest way to resist evil is to invite God’s Spirit to take up residence in our hearts.

What Money Can’t Buy

July 25, 2009 By admin

“I hate those people who love to tell you; ‘Money is the root of all that kills.’ They have never had the joy of a welfare Christmas!”

–I Will Buy You A New Life (Everclear)

The reason we need to guard our hearts is because they are where corruption and evil take hold and spoil our lives. Corruption is not an external thing–it’s internal. On one occasion Jesus told His disciples, “From the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultry, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander.
