The lawbreaker

February 27, 2017 By admin

I have come to the realisation that I have been breaking the most important commandment in the Bible. Which commandment have I been breaking? This one—”A new commandment I give you: Love one another…”

The Confession of Julian Barnes

February 1, 2017 By admin

A friend of mine put me onto the Christian philosopher James K. A. Smith (Calvin College) and his book, How (Not) to Be Secular: Reading Charles Taylor . Smith’s book, as it turns out, is “an idiot’s guide” (my words) to the massive tome (900 pages) of the Canadian philosopher Charles Taylor, Secular Age —a work recognized as a definitive analysis of our secular age. Smith describes Taylor’s work as “a genealogy of the secular and an archaeology of our angst” (ix) and sets out to make Taylor’s provocative conclusions accessible to the rest of us mortals

Compliments

January 17, 2017 By admin

Dear God: It’s amazing how one word of praise can change a day! Heading out to the car after our small-group meeting last Thursday, Vince just sidled over to me and said in a low voice: “You guys have an awesome marriage. And I see how you treat Lisa – that’s amazing, man. Good job.”

Wow. I had never thought much about it; Lisa’s so incredible that being good to her isn’t exactly noble. But I glowed for the rest of the week.

Please help me to be more diligent and proactive about finding positive things to say to the people in my life. It’s such a game-changer when we praise and encourage those we love. I’d like to be more like you were here on earth, “always going around changing water into wine.” Making every occasion a party.

In Jesus’ name, Amen!

The Right Thing

April 2, 2010 By admin

“Remember not only to say the right thing in the right place, but far more difficult still, to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment.”

–Benjamin Franklin

If you haven’t bitten your tongue lately, then perhaps you’re being too lose with it. If you spend a lot of time around people and like to talk, your “word alert” should be set to high sensitivity.

“It only takes a spark, remember, to set off a forest fire. A careless or wrongly placed word out of your mouth can do that. By our speech we can ruin the world, turn harmony to chaos, throw mud on a reputation, send the whole world up in smoke and go up in smoke with it, smoke right from the pit of hell.” –James 3:5-6 (The Message)

Of course, we all make mistakes and say things we wish we hadn’t said, but we don’t have to keep making the same dumb mistakes over and over. By God’s grace our tongues can be “tamed.”

A few years ago I shared something with a friend that I later deeply regretted. I saw the effect it had on several people as it took on its own life and grew beyond its original form. “Like feathers in the wind, our words all fly away, and when they are gone, sometimes we have to pay, I should have known better.”
