"The last chapter of Genesis opens with Joseph grieving over the death of his father Jacob, the third of the great patriarchs of the book. It is a chapter of great pain and sorrow personally for Joseph who had been separated from his father for so long. Both he and Jacob suffered during those years; in death Joseph weeps over his father’s face and kisses his lifeless yet warm body. In love and respect, Joseph has Jacob embalmed according to Egyptian tradition. Following the dignified burial of Jacob in Canaan’s ancestral burial grounds, we find Joseph’s brothers concerned that Joseph will finally take revenge on them. Humble and forgiving, Joseph repeats the words that he spoke earlier “you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good” . . . The kindness in Joseph’s demeanor reminds us of the forgiveness of Christ. The chapter’s ending with the death of Joseph compares starkly to the Creation story of Genesis 1. "Genesis 49 brings us a serious warning: Our deeds and choices have a decided influence on our lives and on our descendants. Many times we are surprised to see how our children Christian and Giovani have behaviors and defects similar to ours. We know that drawing a path of their own has been a struggle, a rational and spiritual quest to strengthen the good characteristics and minimize the bad influences we conveyed to them. But Genesis 49 also brings good news: we do not necessarily have to be bound by the curse of a bad origin. The grace of God can turn a curse into a blessing. Simeon and Levi, on account of their violent character, influenced the dispersion of their tribes in Israel (v.7). But on account of a wise choice by the tribe of Levi to stand against the easy path of idolatry (Ex. 32:26), God chose the Levites as a priestly tribe for Israel. We have two choices today: to just lament our environmental and hereditary weaknesses, or to submit to the action of the Holy Spirit to transform our character into the likeness of Jesus. "This chapter helps us understand Jacob's character and the importance of family relationships. Jacob was an affectionate father who wept over Joseph's disappearance and grieved when Simeon was imprisoned in Egypt. Jacob, now a loving grandfather, kisses and embraces his grandchildren. Surprisingly, Jacob adopts the two sons of Joseph, Manasseh and Ephraim, as his own sons. This was a way of honoring the memory of his beloved wife Rachel, whom he dearly wished could witness that moment with the grandchildren. Thus, the prophecy given to Joseph, that he would have a double portion among his brethren, came to be fulfilled. Jacob refers to God as the benefactor of his life– the One who appeared to him in a moment of great need as he fled to save his life, and the One who promised to bless him with many offspring (verses 3-4). Jacob bears witness that God sustained him and delivered him from all evil, and he pleads with God to bless the children of Joseph (verses 15-16). Jacob's words and deeds reveal the intimacy of his walk with God.
