I’ve just returned from the most amazing experience of my life in the front lines of evangelism! As many of you know, five years ago, AWR launched a new radio station on the island of Mindoro, Philippines. Our plan was to cover the whole island with the full, no-holds-barred Adventist message. We felt a miracle was taking place when village after village began calling the station to request baptism—they wanted to become Seventh-day Adventists! Massive baptisms followed as thousands gave their lives to Jesus. We were overjoyed and thought our job was done on that island. But unbeknownst to us, there were communist assassin rebel groups deep in the mountains listening to the programs! For 50 years they had been waging war against the government to overthrow the current system. Then one day, two years ago, the top rebel leaders contacted our station. They, too, had been listening and wanted to give their hearts to Jesus. The rest is history, and just two weeks ago, we flew to Mindoro to witness their baptism. Hundreds of rebels—including the top generals—gave their lives to Jesus. But that’s not all, because in that baptismal group were several military leaders who have been working with us to reintegrate the rebels into society. They listened to the messages, witnessed the transformations and were moved to also take a stand! One day many years ago, while missionaries in the Congo, we were on our way to the airport when we passed by the body of a woman lying on the street. Our driver explained she had been struck and killed by a car. Later that day, on our way back, we came upon her body again! It was still there, now covered in flies while people walked by. Many years have passed, but I never forgot the sight. If we could see this world as God sees it, the grief and suffering that sin has caused would stagger our mind. It is no wonder then that Jesus said there is such great joy in Heaven when a single soul is saved—because it makes Heaven’s sacrifice worthwhile! God wants us to share in that joy—to work with Him in the saving of souls for the Kingdom of Heaven. That’s what AWR is all about. Nothing goes unnoticed by God—not the forgotten woman on the street, nor the tiny sparrow; not a single tear shed, and not any sacrifice made for the souls for whom Jesus died. One of my favorite authors once said, “If you talk darkness, you will have plenty of darkness, but if you talk light, you will have an abundance of light.” When we look back on our life, do we see the hardships and disappointments, or do we recall the amazing mercies of God? Recently, my wife Kathy and I were remembering some of those mercies, and there were plenty—especially when you agree to a stint in the mission field! Through the years, those mercies have grown and expanded—until today we are seeing miracle after miracle! Something unprecedented is happening right now on the island of Mindoro in the Philippines. In the next few days, more than 100 communist rebels and their families will come out from their hiding places in the jungle mountains to start a new life with Jesus. Adventist World Radio has been working with the Philippine government to negotiate their surrender. They will walk straight into an Adventist church where AWR will be waiting to welcome them, along with the Philippine military and the major news networks from across the country. It will be a historic event! These dear people will remain on the church grounds for a week while they receive counseling, training, and the tools necessary to begin a new life—including funds and an acre of land! The best part is that every night, AWR will hold evangelistic meetings and the military will attend along with these former rebels and their families. I can’t wait to see what God will do next!
