Spend it Wisely

October 13, 2009 By admin

“Yesterday is a canceled check; tomorrow is a promissory note; today is the only cash you have, so spend it wisely.”

–Kay Lyons

Sometimes we obsess over everything but what we can actually control. The past with its regrets is beyond our reach and the future is unknown. Yet these two unreachable realms are what we long for. Anything but the present. The secret to happiness and success lie in making today our preferred destination.

As you go through this day, invest your interests, memories and plans in your present activities and the rest will take care of itself.

Dangerous Faith

September 23, 2009 By admin

“What’s dangerous about the world today is not belief in God or unbelief but ruthless certainty.”

–Lisa Miller, Newsweek Magazine

The only thing we should be ruthless about is our passion to love God and the people He calls us to serve. Unfortunately, some see themselves as chosen by God to eradicate all evil (which often means imposing their beliefs and opinions upon others against their will). History is replete with examples of monarchs, dictators and leaders who have tried to force faith. It has always resulted in some form of persecution.

We have only to remember what happened in the Dark Ages when the Church tried to impose their definition of truth upon the people of Europe. You can read about the devastating results in J.A. Wylie’s History of Protestantism.

What’s Your Passion?

September 21, 2009 By admin

“You cannot motivate the best people with money. Money is just a way to keep score. The best people in any field are motivated by passion.”

–Eric S. Raymond

Getting excited about something is not necessarily the same as being passionate about it. Someone can get excited about playing golf on a sunday afternoon, but Tiger Woods is truly passionate about it. Having passion about something means that your interest is more than casual. You give it your undivided attention!

What are you passionate about? What is it that excites your creativity and motivates you to take action? Ask God to help you find your calling in life, then do something each day to make it a reality.

Being Wrong

August 17, 2009 By admin

“We live an age when no man of importance ever admits that he is wrong.”

–J. B. Priestley

Evidently, some who have achieved significant positions of status view it as an admission of fallibility and human frailty to admit they are capable of making errors. This is why we don’t often hear politicians say, “I did it, it was my mistake. I shouldn’t have voted for that bill.”

When my children were small I remember how hard it was to acknowledge mistakes I made as a parent. When I lost my temper or said unkind words, I asked for their forgiveness. But admitting I had made mistakes was tough. Parents are supposed to know better; they’re old enough to have “already learned.”

Rather than it being a sign of weakness, our admission of error is actually a sign of strength. When we acknowledge our mistakes we remove ourselves from the impossible pedestal of perfection and admit that we are indeed part of the human race. Everyone else already knows it, but our acceptance of this reality gives credibility and authenticity to who we are.

Whether you’re position is one of prominence or low profile, people are watching how you handle life’s twists and turns.

Guard Your Heart

August 14, 2009 By admin

“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life. Avoid all perverse talk; stay away from corrupt speech. Look straight ahead and fix your eyes before you. Mark out a straight path for your feet, stay on the safe path. Don’t get sidetracked; keep your feet from following evil.”

–Proverbs 4:23-27 (NLT)

The reason we need to guard our hearts is because they are where corruption and evil take hold and spoil our lives. Corruption is not an external thing–it’s internal. On one occasion Jesus told His disciples, “From the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander. These are what defile you.” (Matthew 15: 18-20).

We’re pretty lax when it comes to deciding who, or what gets into our hearts. Too often we allow our senses to be taken captive by sights and sounds that are designed to penetrate our defenses with seeds of corruption. The safest way to resist evil is to invite God’s Spirit to take up residence in our hearts.
