Two Adventists in Jamaica Drown at Church Birthday Party

January 1, 2019 By admin

Two Adventists attending a birthday party with their local church this Sunday drowned at a beach in Duncans, Trelawny, Jamaica. The two men were from the Saint Ann parish of the island. According to The Gleaner, Duran Bryan, 30, and 31-year-old Shavan Lewis drowned while church members powerlessly looked on. “One of the bodies was […]

Your Amazing Genes

October 10, 2018 By admin

How is it that two children from one family eat the same food and have similar lifestyles and later on one suffers from diabetes and the other child does not? Over the past decades, scientists have explored this question and although a few theories have emerged they seem to agree that our genes play a role in how our bodies respond to food.

Our bodies are made up of cells. Each cell contains a nucleus and inside the nucleus of most of our cells, there are two sets of the human genome. Each genome is like an instructional book written in an unknown language. Scientists do not understand this language but they do know that a genome has 23 chromosomes and each chromosome is thought to have 30,000 – 80,000 genes.

When genes become active they make thousands of proteins. These proteins make up cells, hair, muscles and many other substances. For every action in the body, proteins are involved and genes regulate these proteins. Normally, genes are copied when making new cells. At times, the genes may not be copied exactly as the original. Usually, this is harmless to our bodies but on occasion these changes may cause a disorder in the body.

Scientists know that the impact of diet on genes and disease is quite complex. For example, looking at our genes can help determine if we are at risk for heart disease. But even if we are, will a low fat diet help us or hurt us? Another complex connection is our diet and Type II diabetes. There are many genes controlling or influencing blood sugar levels, insulin, and even the movement of glucose (blood sugar) into the cells.

The way a disease works in our bodies can be influenced by something called gene expression. Gene expression refers to the strength of a gene. If two people have the similar lifestyles and genes that cause heart disease, one person may have little or no symptoms because the genes express themselves mildly. The other person may have severe symptoms because the genes express themselves strongly.

With today’s technology, scientists have discovered some of the mysteries concerning our genes, but there is still much to uncover. One of the important questions that remains unanswered is how will this new information affect us. On one hand, we can be tested to find out if we carry the gene for a specific disease. If we do, we can change our lifestyles to get rid of or minimize the symptoms. On the other hand, we can respond in fear and go overboard to correct a genetic issue including following the wrong advice. Another issue that some fear is that people who carry certain genes may experience discrimination. They may pay more for health insurance or may not get a job. Be on the look out to see how these issues will be addressed.

Genes are not the only factor that affects our health. The environment, choices, foods, exercise and other factors can impact our health. Genes are only one piece of the healthy puzzle.

Beware the Vegan Nazis

July 2, 2018 By admin

During a retreat time together, a group of my women friends started discussing nutrition. We had been dividing meal preparation for a few days and were aware of some of our group members’ food choices. One person was almost a vegetarian, one avoided sugar, one was a fan of a protein-rich diet, and I was somewhere in the “dabble in almond-meal recipes but still require dark chocolate and wild salmon” zone. Several people wandered into the sanctity of the “only calories count” discussion.

As the protein/paleo member recounted her research on saturated fat, she talked about problems in her progressive community. During the spring Earth Day activities, a nearby health fair became dominated by vegan advocates. The vegans wouldn’t allow representatives from any group that ate or used animal products. My grass-fed beef friend was disturbed that such people wielded so much power and still refused to listen to science data and hard facts. These were people who often considered tolerance in other areas of life. Will they publicly shun or ban commerce with anyone wearing leather, eating at steak restaurants or keeping chickens? Will they go so far as to soon demand that all domestic animals and pets be returned to the wild?

We all shared concerns about the anxiety and fear that seems to provide the basis for much of post-modern nutrition militia. I am aware that food is one area of personal control. Some people restrict food in an effort to exert the only control they seem to possess. Some people eat to fill emotional emptiness, boredom or soothe loss. People can channel their personal anxiety into vegetarianism or caveman diets with equal unbalance. When aspects of the internal or external world seems doomed to failure or threat, food can become a comforting addiction or a sustainable distraction. Perhaps even the symptom of a loss of faith.

It’s a natural desire to share a food plan or diet that has resulted in exhilarating weight loss or improved health. Others may welcome our knowledge and experience as enriching and healing. Or they may find their own answers for their bodies and families. We often want to find more of “our people,” that enjoy a similar worldview. However, when our choices result in a critical self-righteous attitude presented with great fervor–we lose friends and credibility. The underlying message seems to be that dietary noncompliance means you are “less than” or ignorant. Most of us over the age of 50 have lived long enough to remember the debunking of many diets, products, and medications during our lifetimes. Something may help you function at age 25 but not at age 60.

When nutrition and food is combined with religion or spirituality, the outcome for relationships seem to extend into eternity. So we get concerned or preachy. Those of us who believe that our bodies are a gift and not a mistake, get serious about stewardship. We also appreciate that the body and spirit are a holistic unit. Yet a good helping of humility seems wise in a time of burgeoning science regarding individual metabolism, genetics and culture. The Creator has blessed us with a great capacity for uniqueness and ways to respond to him.

Being “right” may be unsustainable–ultimately leading to a table for one.

Karen Spruill writes from Orlando, Florida.

Questions for personal journaling or group discussion:

1. Find the video of “Babette’s Feast” (1987), and watch with a friend or group for discussion.

2. Read Deuteronomy 14:1-21. What do you see as the principles of good health behind God’s nutrition instructions to the Israelites? How might culture have impacted God’s words to them?

Flu Season

October 26, 2015 By admin

I’ve always believed that the best defense to seasonal colds and the flu is a good offense. It’s the daily steps that we take before flu season arrives that give us our best chances for fighting off or lowering the severity of colds and flu. Proper diet, sunshine, exercise, fresh air, plenty of sleep, low stress levels, and proper amounts of water all help our bodies to be in the best of health, allowing us to more effectively fight sickness.

God created us with wondrous and complex bodies, able to fight off disease and stave off sickness, but it is up to each one of us to keep our bodies healthy so that it may work properly when sickness does strike.

Treat Symptoms

Many times we don’t take care of ourselves until sickness is upon us. We drag our haggard selves into the closest Rx for vitamins, drugs and various other cold and flu comforts. Many times these synthetic drugs treat the symptoms but really do nothing to make us get better any faster.

I recently read a newspaper poll conducted on health and sickness, where a high percentage of people polled claimed that diet, water, and sleep were not high priorities in there day to day lives, yet these same people also when polled said that they wished that there were some sort of “magic pill” that would help prevent them from getting sick at all. While we know that it’s impossible on this earth of sin to live without sickness at all, we also know that preventative health is the closest thing to a “magic pill” there is.

This year don’t let the flu sneak up on you, do the things today that will give you the strength you need when sickness rears it’s ugly head.
