The El Monte Seventh-day Adventist Church serves many of its 10,000 plus Vietnamese neighbors by offering two weekly language schools to anyone who is interested. With over 100,000 Vietnamese living in the greater Los Angeles area, many families face language challenges that the church decided to address. With many of the older generations not speaking English, it was and is a challenge for some families to communicate.

Spending time in nature and the great outdoors provides opportunities for us to refresh our spirits and recharge our spiritual batteries. Seventh-day Adventist member Pat Baker had a vision for an old non-functioning youth camp in the Barton Flats area of San Bernardino National Forest. She dared to dream, “What if I could buy the camp and turn it into a healing place, where people could come and be renewed and blessed?” This has been an outreach project for Pat because most of the groups she services are from outside of the Adventist denomination. Ed Keyes (Nevada-Utah Conference President) knew he had met his match when his daughter told him that if he didn’t change his ways, he might not be around to play with his grandkids. Ed works for the Seventh-day Adventist church and knows all about the Adventist heath “advantage” where many Adventists are able to extend their lives approximately seven years beyond the average American, through a healthy, balanced lifestyle. But he wasn’t living it. Weighing in at over 300 pounds, Ed knew that something had to be done.
