October 30, 2016 By admin

All around the world violence seems to be increasing. Terrorism is on the rise. Wars and conflicts seem to be breaking out all over. It leads many to ask if there is any plan for our world? Does God see what is happening?

Contemporary Pioneers

October 26, 2016 By admin

Sometimes we’re tempted to think that the glory days of pioneers exploring new frontiers is a thing of the past. After all, when was the last time you saw a true pioneer?

If you cannot think of any, maybe it’s time to redefine what a pioneer is and does.

Note to self and anyone else reading these lines, pioneers are not required to drive covered wagons and travel the Oregon Trail.

What do pioneers look like today? Typically, they look like everyone else. They live in normal houses, drive to work in regular cars and wear everyday clothes. But this is usually where the similarities end.

Instead of thinking like average people, pioneers dare to dream and question why. They go places in their reasoning that most have never imagined. The word “no” has no place in their vocabulary. In fact, as far as they are concerned “no” means “yes.” Reality is a primer for future possibilities. Nothing is set in concrete.

It is the pioneers who create new technologies, discover disease cures, create new expressions of art, write new songs, forge positions of compromise to pass critical legislation, and risk their lives to extend help to those held hostage by the forces of poverty and ignorance. True pioneers are not distracted by praise, personal attacks or political pundits. With laser-like accuracy their focus is riveted on fulfilling their life mission.

Jesus is a Pioneer when it comes to our salvation. Paul says we should be, “Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:2). NIV

Who do you think of as a twenty-first century pioneer?

Pop-up Windows

October 26, 2016 By admin

Recently, I began to receive a barrage of pop-up windows on my computer. Every time I logged on to the Internet, I received an arsenal of solicitations that included everything from plastic surgery to refinancing. There was no end to it; it was maddening!

Finally, in desperation, I called the Technology Department, who came to my desktop and “did their magic” to correct the problem. I’m not exactly sure what they did, but it worked! They silenced the pop-ups.

Did you know that God uses pop-up windows? He uses them daily to notify us, to warn us and to direct us. We often refer to God’s pop-ups as our conscience, or that still, small voice of His Holy Spirit.

Throughout the day, pop-ups appear on the lighted screen of our minds. Sometimes they alert us that what we are thinking about or doing is dangerous in some way. Other times they suggest thoughtful or helpful things we can do for others. Sometimes they appear as a source of direction guiding us to make the right decision in a certain situation.

Missing God’s Call

But God’s pop-ups are a bit more subtle than the images that flash across your computer screen. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve brushed them aside as irrelevant, only to discover later that they were from God.

Listening to the voice of God is challenging in a world as noisy as ours, but it is a discipline that can be cultivated. Conversely, His voice can also be silenced.

Today, set aside just a few moments of quiet time to talk to Him, then a few moments more to listen. Silence your mind and observe what you hear. Over time you will be able to distinguish His voice amid the clatter.

“Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10, NIV).

Advénte (Church/Smoothie Bar)

October 7, 2016 By admin

Two years ago Pastor Ryan Hablitzel challenged the Logan Seventh-day Adventist Church in the Nevada-Utah Conference to think creatively in order to cash in on creative evangelism funds available through the Pacific Union Conference. After a couple of months of contemplation, the church came up with the idea for Advénte, a young adult program targeting students at Utah State University. Learn more about this positive venture.
