Walking the Path

January 30, 2019 By admin

When I grew up in New York City, we had a big painting hanging on the wall behind the couch. I was intrigued by the scenery because it had a beautiful path wandering through the snow. The path meandered past giant trees and a house, and disappeared into the distance. I would stare at the path and wonder where would it take me if I had strolled through the snow. I would imagine walking and disappearing into the distance right where the path met the horizon. What would I find over the horizon? Where would it take me? I guess that is one reason that I still find photos and artwork with paths intriguing.

Life is like a path that takes us places we never dreamed about or imagined. Sometimes we gaze into the future and try to plan and predict what will happen but we can never see the end of the road. Sometimes, we can’t even see into the next moment. There are too many potholes, cracks in the sidewalk, or pitfalls that might keep us from our final destination.

Once while I was visiting in Washington D.C., I arrived at my hotel after the restaurant closed. I was hungry so I thought I would stop by a nearby drug store for peanuts and a breakfast bar. As I walked quickly through the dark lit streets, I did not see an uneven portion of the sidewalk. Just as I got ready to dart across the street, I tripped and flew out onto the asphalt. Luckily no cars were coming. I was a bit embarrassed as a few people stopped to see if I was okay. I assured them that I was and continued to the drug store. I grabbed a few snacks and other purchases to clean and bandage my wounded knees. That’s right, I skinned both of them rather good.

When we spend time in God’s Word, the messages act as lights to show us the path of life so that we don’t stumble and fall. We learn about the pitfalls of our broken human nature and navigate around them. We discover places that would cause us to stumble in our walk with Christ. And we learn that God gives us strength to go life’s distance.

When we travel through the darkest moments in our lives, we know that we don’t have to fear evil because God tells us in Psalms 23:4 that He is with us. With God’s Word as light, we can navigate the sidewalks of life and avoid falling into situations that hurt or potentially destroy us. He promises us that His Word will guide us through life’s path that will lead us to our final destination: His kingdom.

Why Go to Church?

January 29, 2019 By admin

Sometimes I think about church attendance and wonder if I and others come just to hear a good word or song. We look for inspiration so we can keep going in our lives. Most of the time, we find it. After church, we greet friends and face another week until we meet again. Sometimes, I think about those who don’t go to church. I think about the empty seats and wonder why others don’t come.

I decided to ask a few people who don’t come to church. One person said that she was criticized about the way she dressed. She found more acceptance outside of the church but she still seeks to fill that empty spot inside.

Another person told me that what he reads in the Bible and what he sees in churches are two different things. Because of this, he no longer attends church.

I recently read a book about a man who graduated with a degree in theology. The more he read and studied about Jesus, the less he saw evidence of His presence in church. He visited several churches but he could find only a few bright spots of God at work. He decided to become atheist because the evidence of God was not in the church. While I do not agree with his solution, I am challenged to understand why I go to church.

I thought about this and an old metaphor came to mind. The church is like a hospital. In fact, I’ve heard this comparison several times.

Once, the youth at my church performed a play about a hospital. This hospital took the sick that had good insurance but turned away those who did not have insurance. The uninsured sick were outside and the staff did nothing for them. But there was one staff member who fought hard and worked to get medical care for those who needed it.

Suddenly, the stage went dark. Everyone took off their hospital attire and revealed black t-shirts with various church positions: deacons, elders, youth leaders, and so on. The play continued with the one caring hospital staff becoming so frustrated with the hospital that she walked away from the church. On the back of her t-shirt, it said, “lost.”

Sometimes I think that we have church wrong. We come looking to receive a blessing so we can make it through another week only to return to receive another blessing. Rather than coming to get, why not come to give? Why not help others who seek to have a relationship with God? Why not allow God to flow through us with an attitude of giving. If each of us reached out to those around us and allowed God’s blessings to flow through us, church would make a difference in our broken society.

What would this look like? Perhaps we could find someone we don’t know, introduce ourselves and learn if this person if they needed help with anything. If they need help, then help them or help them find someone who can help.

We could find a visitor and pray with them or invite them to eat with us. Perhaps we could reach out to someone new in town and assist if any needs emerge.

Perhaps we could give a hand-written card to someone who lost a family member. Perhaps we can give someone a ride if a ride is needed. Perhaps we can say words of encouragement to the pastor; and yes, pastors need to be encouraged too. I believe a church filled with people like this would be packed.

Although I haven’t mastered this completely, when I go to church, my goal is to reach out to others. I ask God to show me what I need to do… and he does. I’ve met a lot of new folks and try to help if there is a need.

Skin Care

December 12, 2018 By admin

Most people don’t think of skin as an organ but is considered to be the largest organ in our body. Quite a bit of money is spent on maintaining it. Foot creams, facial masks and hand lotions are among the products we like to use to help our skin to stay healthy and look young. However, there are other things we can do to help keep it healthy.

Sun. Getting exposure to the sun is healthy for our bodies but too much sun can damage the skin. Using a sunblock with at least an SPF of 15 will help minimize the damage caused by ultraviolet rays. Also, avoiding the sun between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm will also help minimize skin damage.1

Food. Most health experts will say that outside of eating a healthy diet and drinking plenty of water, the diet has little effect on skin. A healthy diet helps support healthy blood flow and this helps our skin get the nutrients we need. However, one study showed that eating low glycemic foods such whole plant foods, may play a role in preventing acne. Researchers suggest that more studies are needed to help understand this connection.2 It has also been reported that foods such as chocolate, soda, and greasy foods can aggravate symptoms.3

Smoking. Next to our skin are tiny blood vessels that deliver oxygen and nutrients to the skin. Tobacco smoke restricts these vessels and our skin does not get all of the nutrients it needs. To help maintain our skin, quit smoking and avoid second-hand smoke.

Bathe. A daily bath or shower helps the skin to stay clean and helps to maintain moisture. To help keep the skin hydrated, pat dry and avoid rubbing the skin. Keep baths and showers to 5 – 10 minutes. Longer bathing times increase drying the skin. This will help prevent drying. Use ointments and creams 3 minutes after bathing. This will also help keep the skin hydrated.4 Keep skin moisturized with lotions after washing your hands will help skin to stay healthy. Use a lip balm to keep lips from drying out.

As we age, our skin gets thinner, starts to wrinkle and may not heal as fast as our younger days. Developing a few habits can help slow the aging process and keep our skin healthy.

Probiotics

November 1, 2018 By admin

Sometimes, when we hear of bacteria, we automatically classify them as bad. After all, bacteria is the culprit in spoiling foods or making water bad to drink. What if I told you that there are good bacteria that are thought to actually help you have a healthy digestive system? It’s true.

Our digestive system harbors many bacteria and they help us to keep a healthy gut. They also help us digest food, make certain vitamins or destroy other bacteria or microorganisms that might cause diseases. Sometimes, our gut health can be compromised by using antibiotics or battling chronic diarrhea. Long term diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome can also compromise our health.  The level of good bacteria may drop and we can experience stomach upset, diarrhea and other symptoms. By adding good bacteria in the form of probiotics to the gut, we may reduce or eliminate symptoms. (1)

Is the research supportive of this? Researchers’ initial reports are promising. The evidence points to probiotics being helpful in preventing antibiotic- or infection- induced diarrhea and reducing the symptoms associated with irritable bowel syndrome. Other areas of possible benefits have been reported. Eczema, hay fever, tooth decay, colic in infants, liver disease, the common cold and other areas are being explored.

What kind of bacteria do we find in probiotics?  The most popular types of probiotic bacteria are Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. There are several types under each of these groups and they are thought to be beneficial. We find probiotics in dairy drinks like Kefir, milk, soy or coconut yogurts, sauerkraut, kimchi, tempeh, supplements and other forms.

Adding yogurt to breakfast, tempeh to a favorite dish for lunch and a Kefir drink for dinner can help build up the intake of probiotics. Read the label of the favorites to see if probiotics are included and make these foods a part of everyday eating.

Allergies on the Rise

October 30, 2018 By admin

Lately, it seems that there are more conversations about food allergies.

In my own household, we have a milk and related product allergies, and wheat allergies. At work, I have collected even more information on children and adults who cannot eat peanuts due to severe allergic reactions. Other nuts, eggs, fish, shellfish and even fruits and vegetables are found on the list for allergies. Why do we have so many allergies. Scientists are scratching their heads trying to figure out why all of the allergies.

Peanuts seem to be the biggest offender. According to Food Business News, anaphylactic responses to peanuts grew 445 percent. (1). Some of the mild symptoms can include a runny nose, hives, itchiness, redness or swelling of the skin or shortness of breath. Other symptoms can be diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea and vomiting. Other symptoms can be life threatening and may require a visit to the emergency room. Swelling of the throat, a drop in blood pressure, rapid pulse, dizziness and loss of consciousness are serious. (2) Because of the risk of these and other symptoms, schools and other public locations want to create a peanut-free zone.

Children are not the only population affected by these allergic reactions. The rise is found among adults too. NBC news gave a detailed report of a woman who had a severe reaction to shellfish and ended up in the emergency room. She has drastically reduced eating out because she learned that a lot of facilities work with shellfish. She wants to avoid at all costs another trip to the hospital because of allergies.

What can we do to prevent allergies? Researchers don’t know but here are a few things we can do to prevent a reaction. If you suspect an allergy:

1. Check with your doctor and get checked for allergies. Once the source of allergies has been identified, if possible, avoid the food or whatever causes the allergy.

2. Make sure you read labels of your favorite products. If eating out, check the menu and check with the staff to make sure they do not use the offending food or share equipment with that food.

3. If you are given medication or an EpiPen, follow the directions given by your doctor. Carry your EpiPen with you at all times to counteract any life-threatening symptoms.

4. Read material and stay current on the subject. Check with organizations such as Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America at www.aafa.org, and The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology at www.aaaai.org.

Be proactive to avoid symptoms associated with allergy-related foods.
