**To share this story: By Kimberly Luste Maran “God wouldn’t let me sleep,” Sabra Johnson said about the night she and her husband, Nick, helped save motorist Kristin Smitson from being swept away by flood waters in the early morning hours on April 29. Quick thinking with a flashlight and a call to 911 brought the help Smitson needed, whose car became completely submerged. New York Church Holds Nurses’ Sabbath, Emphasizes Faith Community Nursing

Photo by Pieter Damsteegt For the past 11 years Joan Payne, a nurse practitioner and member of the Westvale Seventh-day Adventist Church in Syracuse, New York, has coordinated Nurses’ Sabbath, typically held on the first Saturday of May. The timing for the event, which celebrates nurses in the congregation and the local community, is intentional. National Nurses Week in the United States is held May 6 through May 12, Florence Nightingale’s birthday. Almost 400 people attended this year’s special event on April 29, which many heard about through friends and family.
