Commentary by Edwin Reynolds:
"This chapter is on the family history of Judah, a tribe that gave rise to Jesus. And that is why we have so much of the family history! The Messiah did not come from a lineage of holy or honored people. Rather, Judah and his sons acted in ways that displeased God. The human ancestors of Jesus were sinners. Judah even chose a heathen wife contrary to God’s will. (Gen 38:1,2). And this lady may have been the leading bad influence on his children. Judah looks evil in this chapter, deceiving Tamar and being deceived by her posing as a harlot. If he had chosen an obedient life, how much simpler it would have been with blessings instead of curses. Judah eventually confessed that Tamar "hath been more righteous than I” (Gen. 38:26). Sometimes we tend to judge people quickly without realizing that we are perhaps just as sinful or even more so than they. The Bible does not hide the fact that Jesus came from a human lineage so dirty as this. But despite his inherited weaknesses, He trusted in His Father, and never once sinned.
Jesus is our perfect example. Judah, leaning on himself, most assuredly is not." โค๏ธ Jump to Daily Bible Reading https://www.revivalandreformation.org/bhp/en/bible/gen/38 Our accounts in other social networks:

Commentary by Edwin Reynolds:
"What I learned from this part of Joseph’s story about Joseph's betrayal by his brothers is that God has plans for each and every one of us. Everything that happens, good or bad, God can work out to benefit our lives. As we read Genesis 38 and onwards into Joseph's story, we see how God planned everything for eventual good. Likewise, you and I might face trials, temptations, hardships, but let us not forget that if we surrender our lives to Him, He will direct our path and take care of us. He has certainly done that for me. So let us be faithful until the reward. God will never put us in a position which we cannot handle in His strength. We are blessed that we have God that can turn things upside-down! Amen! Commentary by Edwin Reynolds:
"Here in Kenya, there is a betting craze among the youth and adults alike. Many are participating in sports betting and lotteries in the hope of winning the elusive jackpot. In Genesis 36, we find a narration of the genealogy of Esau. Despite God having promised to multiply Jacob and to enrich him, Esau is the one who increases and is enriched first. The fulfillment of God's promise to Jacob began to appear later, but the effect of the blessing remained longer, and has its complete accomplishment in spiritual Israel. God promised Jacob that kings should come out of his loins (Gen. 35: 11), yet Esau's blood becomes royal long before any of Jacob's did. However, not much is mentioned about Esau’s lineage after the third and fourth generation. In Jacob's story we learn that however long it takes, God's word will be accomplished. The call to us is not to be distracted by the fleeting and temporary, nor to be discouraged by the perceived delay of the promise; but in all things to remain faithful. We can trust that God will complete the work in us and that he is not slack concerning his promise (Phil. 1:6, 2 Pet. 3:9)." โค๏ธ Jump to Daily Bible Reading https://www.revivalandreformation.org/bhp/en/bible/gen/36 Our accounts in other social networks:

Commentary by Edwin Reynolds:
"Genesis 35 shows three pictures of death as related to Deborah, Rachel and Isaac. Rebekah's nurse, Deborah, had faithfully been with her as they wandered from Mesopotamia to Canaan. Jacob and Rachel mourned her death as a loss of a family friend who had contributed so much to them. As a remembrance, her tomb under an oak at Bethel was called Allonbachuth, “the oak of weeping” (Genesis 35:8). A short time later, Rachel gave birth to her second son. But her gift to her beloved Jacob cost her life. Her dying name for the boy, Benoni,“son of my sorrow,”gave way to Jacob’s choice, Benjamin, “son of my strength.” The death of Rachel was to him a deep and heavy grief, one remembered as he lay on his own deathbed.
Isaac’s long life in Hebron was that of an outsider, just as Abraham’s life had been. But his 180 years was marked by obedience as much as by suffering and toil. He lived, astoundingly, to 180 years (Genesis 35:28). I think about these life endings found in the Scripture stories. Deborah’s lifetime of faithful service, Rachel’s true love to her family, and Isaac’s perseverance as a believer among heathen people, all speak to me here in Malaysia." โค๏ธ Jump to Daily Bible Reading https://www.revivalandreformation.org/bhp/en/bible/gen/35 Our accounts in other social networks:

Commentary by Edwin Reynolds:
"To protect His people, God commanded His children not to associate romantically with the heathen society around them. That way they could avoid compromise and mischief. But Dinah was heedless of these things. First she hung out with the young heathen ladies. But that gave opportunity for one of their popular bachelors to notice her. And he did. And the result was that she was sexually assaulted. This led to the death of her suitor and of all his town! And the effect of this slaughter was that Dinah’s whole family had to pack up all their belongings and move far away where they would not be in danger from a war of revenge. I finished my time as a student at the Institute of East Asia studies a few months ago. Now I am working as a single young lady surrounded by heathen men. I learned that I should be careful in choosing friends. I should listen to God’s word because I can see that one sin will lead to another. Therefore, I want to have a close relationship with God always so that I can hear His voice when He warns me about the danger that faces me. Amen." โค๏ธ Jump to Daily Bible Reading https://www.revivalandreformation.org/bhp/en/bible/gen/34 Our accounts in other social networks:
