Love Month

October 26, 2016 By admin

If months had themes, July would go down in history for me as “love month.” For one, the text of our Bible study at church has been First John, which uses the word “love” more times than the hippie manifesto.

Secondly, I’ve been working on my seminar “Love in the Last Days” for a presentation next month. Last but not least, I had my family reunion.

Eleven people slept in my three-bedroom house. There were uncles puzzled into beds too short for them, mothers on pullouts, cousins strewn on the floor. Meals were equally freeform, whether tailgating at a New Jersey beach or having a Sunday morning waffle extravaganza on paper plates. The greatest challenge was organizing and directing the activities, which had to be spontaneously planned according to the weather. Although we hit the beaches, a couple restaurants and some tourist sites, the high point for me was probably playing Cranium with my nephews Shawn and Gavin. Isn’t it telling that the most memorable activities are often free?

As the relatives gradually departed, the house fell into a contrasting silence. That silence will swell to deafening when the girls go back to school. People are a terrible inconvenience, but life—and our house—is quite empty without them. The wise man said, “Where no oxen are, the crib is clean,” Proverbs 14:4. I’ll take oxen and dirt.

What’s my point? Simply that we are designed for connection. It’s as if people are born with one-sided Velcro on their hearts, capable of adhering to others. No! It’s more than that, because Velcro doesn’t hurt or hunger. It’s that we’re made in God’s image, and “God is love,” 1 John 4:18. If All-sufficiency can long for connection, then His creation all the more. Unfortunately, many human relationships fail, leaving this hunger unsatisfied. Our essential selfishness folds us inward like shriveled wineskins, reducing capacity and rendering relationships either non-existent or dysfunctional.

But there’s hope. The Scriptures reveal a God who can connect with the unconnected. Regardless of how wrong our human relationships have gone; regardless of the depths of our isolation or the death-grip of our human conflicts, we can at any point turn to Him and know that we are loved. I don’t know of another worldview that has this to offer.

I Am Someone

October 26, 2016 By admin

Dear God: I’m a nobody! I feel like I do not amount to very much. It appears as though whatever I do is insignificant. Nothing of any count! Not many friends – and, yes, at times I feel like a social misfit. I could drop out of existence and no one would know the difference.

But today I read in your word “that you have redeemed me, you have called me by name, I am yours” (Isaiah 43:1). Because of your Son Jesus, I am someone! You gave your all to redeem me. You have put your love inside me. That makes me worth something. That makes me “somebody.”

Thank you, God, for taking me, a nobody, and bringing me into your family –the family of Heaven–and by your compassionate grace giving me value. God, you are wonderful!

In Jesus’ name. Amen!

Better Sermons, Please

October 26, 2016 By admin

Dear God: I have to open up my heart to you, Lord. Here goes: please bless Pastor with an extra portion of your Spirit regarding sermons. Lately they seem so disorganized, so empty of meat, so uninspiring. And the plain reality going in is that preaching has never been his forte. These past few years we’ve had several families finally drift across town, sighing, “We just do not get fed.”

Father, I know that all of us have gifts and gaps, strong points and weak ones. Please help me to be patient with our pastor’s “journeyman” pulpit abilities and his predictable points. I want to have a patient heart and a searching soul; when there’s an occasional good nugget of truth, please don’t let me miss it because I’m fuming over in the corner.

I’m asking you to also help me simply love this man. He serves us faithfully; he visits his members diligently and he has the most loving heart. That’s worth a lot. I realize that we can feed our souls in other ways besides at 11:30 a.m. Sabbath morning; please lead me toward the spiritual resources that I need.

But to the extent that it’s within your appropriate power, Father, nurture our pastor with new ideas and impassioned convictions. Open up his eyes to the illustrations and the gospel nuggets that sparkle in the universe all around us. Add your miraculous blessing to his dogged commitment, and we’ll say “Amen” as often as we can.

In Jesus’ name, Amen!

Well Connected

October 26, 2016 By admin

Dear God: I’m pretty connected. After all, I work at my computer all day and sometimes into the night and have full access to e-mail. My Outlook actually makes a beeping sound when I get a new message. And Facebook. What can I say? With that instrument, I’m connected to people all around the world. We share really important things like how glad we are it’s Friday and bad news such as the Cardinals lost. Then there’s my Blackberry. Even when I’m not at my computer, I’m “connected.”

But what about the most important connection? Being connected to my boss and my friends is one thing, but what about the connection to the one who sustains me? (Ephesians 6:18, NLT) is pretty specific: “Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.”

God, make me aware of my need for prayer and also my need to pray for others.

In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Deal or No Deal

October 26, 2016 By admin

Dear God: Sometimes I watch Deal or no Deal on television. People have an opportunity to choose a brief case that may have as much as $1 million in it. It’s a frustrating show because most contestants are greedy and even when they are ensured by the banker of taking home hundreds of thousands of dollars, they keep trying to win more. Sometimes I even shout advice at the television contestants.

If my life were on television and people could see how I grasp at things: a nicer car, more furniture, more clothes, more stuff for my grandchildren, then I’m sure there’d be people shouting at me to stop and consider what I already have.

“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure that was hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again. He was very happy. So he went and sold everything he had. And he bought that field” (Matthew 13:44, NIRV).

In Jesus’ name. Amen.
