Misjudging Motives

October 15, 2018 By admin

“Dad, can I have a few more gallons of gas for my pick-up? I’m almost completely out.” My 16 year-old son has had an old 1976 Chevy pick-up since he was 12, and has driven it around our little North Dakota farmstead for a while now. Country kids often do these kinds of things on the family farm, and my son has enjoyed driving this old truck to the back woods of our property for years.

Recently though, he had begun to ask for fuel to put in his tank. He was short on cash but still wanted to be able to drive the old pickup around the property…and so I allowed him to remove some fuel from the stash that we kept in the garage for mowing our lawns. Upon the third time that he requested gas for his truck, I found myself getting a bit annoyed. He had been driving his truck every night to the back woods at sundown, and I began to privately question his use of petrol when he clearly didn’t seem to be accomplishing much on the property on his nightly excursions.

“What are you doing in the woods that would cause you to need to go up there every night? I’m not made of money ya know, and unless you’re doing something really important with that truck, I’m wondering why you need that gas so regularly.” As my cynical words rushed out carelessly, my son looked at the ground. “Seriously Michael, why are you going to the backwoods every night at around the same time?”

My son fidgeted, his hands stuffed in his jean pockets as he kicked at the dirt in the driveway. He spoke so softly that I had to strain to hear his quiet reply. “Well Dad, I go up there every night to watch the sun go down and I spend time praying.” My eyes immediately filled with tears and I couldn’t stop the lump from forming in my throat. My boy was spending time with His Creator every night in a holy place that was all his own, and I had misjudged his actions as merely wanting more gas to drive through the woods in his pickup.

There are so many times in my life when I have misjudged others that I have lost count. I have jumped to conclusions about peoples’ motives, have discredited their actions, and sought to justify my self-centered indignation about what I thought they were doing. I had done the same thing with my only son, and my heart ached to think that I had even opened up the conversation when this soft-spoken young man had made his trivial request. My boy was using the fuel for a higher purpose, and although he could’ve walked to the backwoods, driving his pick-up was part of the spiritual routine of connecting with his Heavenly Father.

I smiled through my tears as I put my arm around his shoulders. “Son, I had no idea you spent time with God every night. I’m sorry that I even questioned you about it. Take all the gas you think you’ll need.”

God’s Dwelling Place

October 9, 2018 By admin

Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 1 Corinthians 6:19.

When I Am Tempted

August 7, 2018 By admin

“Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.”  – Mike Tyson

I like that quote. It may seem violent on the surface but it aptly sums up the human plight of temptation and our inability to deal with it on our own. I’m sure Mr. Tyson wasn’t even thinking about a spiritual application when he said this, but I’m going to go out on a limb and attempt one.

Dr. Loran Nordgren, a senior lecturer at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management in Chicago, ran a series of experiments that placed college students in “tempting situations” to smoke, eat junk food, or forgo studying. The research found that we often display what’s called a “restraint bias.” In other words, we tend to overestimate how much self-control we will have against temptation when we’re not in the “heat of the moment.”

Our “restraint bias” causes us to think that we can handle more temptation than we actually can. Dr. Nordgren warned that “Those who are most confident about their self-control are the most likely to give in to temptation.”* All of our well-laid plans on how we’re going to deal with life’s temptations, can very quickly evaporate into thin air if we’re attempting to fight the battle on our own…especially in the heat of the moment.

“No test or temptation that comes your way is beyond the course of what others have had to face. All you need to remember is that God will never let you down; He’ll never let you be pushed past your limit; He’ll always be there to help you come through it” 1 Corinthians 10:13.

If I’m dealing with temptation that seems to get the better of me, there are a couple of things that help me to better position myself for victory:

1. I recognize that I’m not the only person who’s ever had the temptation that I’m struggling with. I’m not exactly sure why that seems to be strangely comforting to me, but it is. It means that I’m not alone. Others have walked the same road of temptation.

2. I don’t have what it takes to get past this on my own. I need help, and God has promised me that He’s already provided a way out. As difficult as this is for me to internalize sometimes, I choose to remember that it is God’s faithfulness that helps me deal…not my faithfulness.

I’ve proven to myself (over and over again), that I can be my own worst enemy when it comes to dealing with temptation, but my Creator has also proven that He always shows up to help me. Remembering this helps me move forward with faith and confidence.

Beware the Vegan Nazis

July 2, 2018 By admin

During a retreat time together, a group of my women friends started discussing nutrition. We had been dividing meal preparation for a few days and were aware of some of our group members’ food choices. One person was almost a vegetarian, one avoided sugar, one was a fan of a protein-rich diet, and I was somewhere in the “dabble in almond-meal recipes but still require dark chocolate and wild salmon” zone. Several people wandered into the sanctity of the “only calories count” discussion.

As the protein/paleo member recounted her research on saturated fat, she talked about problems in her progressive community. During the spring Earth Day activities, a nearby health fair became dominated by vegan advocates. The vegans wouldn’t allow representatives from any group that ate or used animal products. My grass-fed beef friend was disturbed that such people wielded so much power and still refused to listen to science data and hard facts. These were people who often considered tolerance in other areas of life. Will they publicly shun or ban commerce with anyone wearing leather, eating at steak restaurants or keeping chickens? Will they go so far as to soon demand that all domestic animals and pets be returned to the wild?

We all shared concerns about the anxiety and fear that seems to provide the basis for much of post-modern nutrition militia. I am aware that food is one area of personal control. Some people restrict food in an effort to exert the only control they seem to possess. Some people eat to fill emotional emptiness, boredom or soothe loss. People can channel their personal anxiety into vegetarianism or caveman diets with equal unbalance. When aspects of the internal or external world seems doomed to failure or threat, food can become a comforting addiction or a sustainable distraction. Perhaps even the symptom of a loss of faith.

It’s a natural desire to share a food plan or diet that has resulted in exhilarating weight loss or improved health. Others may welcome our knowledge and experience as enriching and healing. Or they may find their own answers for their bodies and families. We often want to find more of “our people,” that enjoy a similar worldview. However, when our choices result in a critical self-righteous attitude presented with great fervor–we lose friends and credibility. The underlying message seems to be that dietary noncompliance means you are “less than” or ignorant. Most of us over the age of 50 have lived long enough to remember the debunking of many diets, products, and medications during our lifetimes. Something may help you function at age 25 but not at age 60.

When nutrition and food is combined with religion or spirituality, the outcome for relationships seem to extend into eternity. So we get concerned or preachy. Those of us who believe that our bodies are a gift and not a mistake, get serious about stewardship. We also appreciate that the body and spirit are a holistic unit. Yet a good helping of humility seems wise in a time of burgeoning science regarding individual metabolism, genetics and culture. The Creator has blessed us with a great capacity for uniqueness and ways to respond to him.

Being “right” may be unsustainable–ultimately leading to a table for one.

Karen Spruill writes from Orlando, Florida.

Questions for personal journaling or group discussion:

1. Find the video of “Babette’s Feast” (1987), and watch with a friend or group for discussion.

2. Read Deuteronomy 14:1-21. What do you see as the principles of good health behind God’s nutrition instructions to the Israelites? How might culture have impacted God’s words to them?

Lake Union Youth distribute petition urging fairness and humanity in U.S. immigration and gun control policy

June 8, 2018 By admin

More than 300 participants attending last weekend’s Hispanic Youth Congress on the campus of Andrews University signed petitions requesting fairness and humanity in policies pertaining to U.S. immigration and gun control.
According to Carmelo Mercado, Lake Union vice president and director of Multicultural ministries, the decision to circulate the two petitions grew out of discussions leading up to a social justice workshop at the youth congress, as “we wanted to not just talk the theory, but…
