Attitude of Gratitude

November 22, 2017 By admin

Dear God: This is the time of year that we think about earth’s harvest, good food, and being with family. Thanksgiving is the busiest travel day of the year in the United States. If possible, many want to be home for Thankgiving! Thank you for giving us a hunger for meaningful relationships.

Thanksgiving is all about being thankful. Too bad it only lasts one day! If we could only be thankful the rest of the year how different our world would be. How different we would be. Please give me an attitude of gratitude. Help me to view life as a glass that’s half-full instead of one that’s half-empty.

Thank you for good food to eat and for the loved ones sitting around my table. Thank you for the promise of a glorious homecoming in heaven that will include everyone who has ever lived and believed in You, and has accepted You as their Lord and Savior.

In Jesus’ name. Amen!
Rich DuBose writes from Northern California.

I’m Frustrated

October 24, 2017 By admin

Dear God: I’m fat and I’m frustrated — but I guess not quite enough to do anything about it. I cringe every time I hear on the news that Americans are getting fatter and fatter and I hope the picture shows someone a whole lot bigger than me. Truth is, it doesn’t matter. I’m unhealthy and my eating has taken on a life of its own. Sure I don’t steal or kill or cheat. I’m rarely unkind and am really working on not gossiping. I’m saving my money and am very generous to those in need. But I’m slowly killing myself while cherishing the sin of gluttony.

An awful word, but you’re specific in Proverbs 23:21: “For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty.” That could be poverty of spirit, or money or lost health. None of which are what I want for my life. Fill my emptiness with your spirit. May only good, healthy food pass my lips and in appropriate proportions. Make me hungry for you and your word.

In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Dixie Dee Whited writes from the Eastern U.S.

I Love Fall

October 4, 2017 By admin

Dear God: What a glorious day. The leaves just turning their beautiful colors — gold, red, yellow, burgundy. A walk in the woods with my grandsons turned into a wonderful teaching time and exploration about you and your creation. Even though close to freezing, some tiny flowers still held on adding blues and purples to brown of the fallen leaves. Green skinned black walnuts and broken shells scattered on the forest floor led to talks about how you’ve provided for all creation.

Armed with sticks, it was easy to imagine how the David the shepherd boy or David the warrior felt when he was taking care of sheep or escaping King Saul. The path along the creek reminded us of one of David’s more famous psalms: “He leads me beside peaceful streams … and even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid for you are close beside me. Your rod and staff protect and comfort me” (Psalm 23 NLT).

In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Dixie Dee Whitted writes from the eastern United States.

Time For School

September 18, 2017 By admin

Dear God:  School has started, and I pray that Your special blessing rests on all educational institutions. Help school administrators and boards seek Your wisdom and guidance in their decisions. Help all teachers and instructors be positive role models as they teach. Help each student to have a desire to develop a character that is sterling as they learn knowledge. Help them to realize that character is something to be sought after (Rom. 5:4).

Help them know that they should do what is right, because it is right. Lord, people of character don’t make up the rules as they go along–they agree to the rules beforehand. You have set the standard and we are accountable to that standard. We don’t ask “What is right for me?” Rather, we ask “What is right?” And then we obey.

So teach us all that if we are to be individuals of character, we must submit to Your code of conduct because we choose to do what is right.

Thank you Jesus. Amen!
Bud Roberts writes from Northern California.

Sometimes I Doubt

July 11, 2017 By admin

Dear God: I was hit with a surging wave of doubt today. About You. Please forgive me, but I’m sometimes bombarded by the fact that everything about You, every claim You make, is invisible and has to be taken on faith. That You exist. That the Bible lessons my parents made me study are true and not a case of massive group hypnosis. That heaven is actually out there. That I’ll have another life, an eternal one, after they drive me to the cemetery.

It feels like I have to choose—every single day—to not be an atheist! And I do choose not to be one, but today it was an exercise of pure will and not much heart.

Please know that I do choose to love You. And that I try each day to think about the good evidences that my Christian faith is based on. But I need Your help. Like that frustrated father who cried to You: “I do believe—sort of. Help my unbelief.”

In Jesus’ name. Amen.
David Smith writes from Southern California.
