The Cold Hard Facts

May 9, 2016 By admin

We get more colds in winter than summer–not because it’s colder or wetter, but because we spend more time indoors where viruses are easier to swap. Classroom-cloistered children prove to be expert carriers of the malady.

Cold sufferers are infectious a day or two before they experience symptoms. Sinus congestion and colored nasal discharge are common signs of a cold, not necessarily the result of a bacterial infection, so antibiotics aren’t needed. Colds can last up to 14 days, and coughs can linger longer.

The best preventive action? Wash your hands often, and keep your immune system strong by eating plenty of fruits and vegetables.

From Atkins to Zone

April 26, 2016 By admin

Author: Winston Craig, MPH, PhD, RD. How safe are popular weight loss diets? “We are an overfed, over-advertised, and under-exercised nation”, says Dr Farquhar of Stanford University Center for Research in Disease Prevention . Partly to blame is the “enormous portion sizes and sitting in front of the TV and computer all day” he said recently. With Americans eating more and exercising less, obesity rates are climbing

April 26, 2016 By admin

Author: Winston Craig, MPH, PhD, RD. Lunasin, a newly discovered protein in soybeans, was found to arrest tumor growth. A Harvard study found that vitamin D and cereal fiber, and to a lesser degree exercise and calcium intake, decreased the risk of colorectal cancer.

Diabetic Diet Plan

April 25, 2016 By admin

Diabetes Diet Guidelines UN’s blue circle symbol for diabetes About 11 million Americans have diabetes, a disease that takes a heavy toll. Medical costs attributed to diabetes exceed $15 billion a year. Diabetes, which is associated with cardiovascular disease and kidney complications, claims over 130,000 lives a year. Consumption of a low-fat, plant-based diet, coupled with regular exercise and weight loss, has been shown to reduce the risk of Type II diabetes (non-insulin dependant diabetes) and facilitate the successful management of Type II diabetes. A vegetarian diet, rich in legumes and slow-digesting whole grains, improves blood glucose control and provides long-term benefits for those individuals with Type II diabetes
