The Good Ole Days

November 9, 2016 By admin

Dear God: When I was raising my kids, it was very different. They didn’t sit and watch television all day. They didn’t have iPods filled with trashy music and computers in their rooms. My children were respectful and dressed appropriately. What’s happening to kids today? I see them at church and I’m embarrassed about what they’re wearing and can’t stand to hear them talk. It can’t be pleasing to you God or to their parents. I’m actually a little afraid of some of them with their weird haircuts and skin-tight clothes.

Only You can help me love and respect them. Help me to pray for them and that my critical spirit will be exchanged with love for each and every one of them no matter what they wear. Give me love for their over-worked parents and if I have an opportunity to reach out and help, show me the window of opportunity.

In Jesus’ name. Amen!

The Seeing-Eye God

November 1, 2016 By admin

Several weeks ago during my morning quiet time, I prayed for God to show up somewhere and make Himself evident. I talk to Him most days, and I believe in Him, but sometimes, I need a little handholding and reassurance. And I was going to the ophthalmologist that day for what I believed would be a diagnosis that I did not want. So I was feeling a little insecure.

I went through my morning, met a friend for a business lunch appointment, and then went to my eye appointment. I had been there two weeks earlier and was asked to return. Another round of pupil dilation, a couple of tests, and then the doctor came in to review things. He looked over papers twice, looked in my eyes, and then declared that everything was good. He blamed the mistaken condition on a machine that gave an inaccurate reading last time. “Your optic nerve looks fine today. Come back in six months–good-bye.“

Hours later at home after my pupils had come back to their normal setting, the significance of my day suddenly dawned on me. God had literally “shown up” today. He was there in my eye appointment. Now I know that He doesn’t or can’t go about healing every medical condition (I still have some of those), however, I had asked to SEE Him today. I had to laugh at the way it transpired. He is the creator of symbolism.

As I have been reading Luke 11, I realize that asking is important, whether God acts or my eyesight just gets better. Verse 9: “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you ”(NIV). I believe that He delights in surprising us and reminding us of His love. So I am emboldened to ask for more.

Thankfully, my perspective on life has very little to do with my optic nerve. Yet I filter everything that I view through the lens of God’s love and my faith in Him. “If you live wide-eyed in wonder and belief, your body fills up with light. If you live squinty-eyed in greed and distrust, your body is a dank cellar. Keep your eyes open, your lamp burning, so you don’t get musty and murky. Keep your life well-lighted as your best-lighted room” (Luke 11:34-36, MG).

I’m Sorry

October 26, 2016 By admin

Dear God: I have finally come to realize that cannot make myself sorry for the negative things I say and do. Your word calls for repentance, but I don’t have it within myself to bring it to pass. I can say “I’m sorry,” but that doesn’t mean I really am. I can even act like I’m sorry, but that doesn’t mean I am in my heart.

Only You can give me the gift of true repentance. You will never force me to be sorry against my will–I have to choose it. But repentance is truly a wonderful gift. Without it I’m like an animal stuck in a cage–bound against my will and at the mercy of another. I cannot escape. My only hope is that Someone will come along and release me.

Lord, you have done just that, and I praise You for it! Thank you for the gift of repentance. Thank you for making me thirsty for Your word and giving me an appetite for spiritual things. Now I can say with the Psalmist:

“As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God. I thirst for God, the living God.” –Psalm 42 (NLT)

Use me today to show others how easy it is to be forgiven and cleansed!

In Jesus’ name. Amen!.

A Radical Idea

October 26, 2016 By admin

Dear God: The law of heaven calls for a radical way of living that turns human logic on its head. It’s customary for us to love and value those who treat us well. It is easy to embrace people who are kind and considerate. But you want me to love the unlovely, rude, and disrespectful “nuts” who could care less about me or the needs of others. That’s hard to do! In fact, it is impossible! But then, you’re not afraid of impossibile things.

Today, give me the ability to love as you love. Fill my heart with heaven’s light. Teach me that even the “nuts” are your children, which makes them my brothers and sisters.

Change my heart and fill me with your righteousness. Wash away my sins and make me clean.

In Jesus’ name. Amen!

Deal or No Deal

October 26, 2016 By admin

Dear God: Sometimes I watch Deal or no Deal on television. People have an opportunity to choose a brief case that may have as much as $1 million in it. It’s a frustrating show because most contestants are greedy and even when they are ensured by the banker of taking home hundreds of thousands of dollars, they keep trying to win more. Sometimes I even shout advice at the television contestants.

If my life were on television and people could see how I grasp at things: a nicer car, more furniture, more clothes, more stuff for my grandchildren, then I’m sure there’d be people shouting at me to stop and consider what I already have.

“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure that was hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again. He was very happy. So he went and sold everything he had. And he bought that field” (Matthew 13:44, NIRV).

In Jesus’ name. Amen.
