Constant Pain

October 26, 2016 By admin

Dear God: Help. Jesus, I can hardly pray beyond that one word. I hurt all over. The pain is with me in the morning, nags me through the day, and climbs into bed with me at night. Even my sleep is restless and interminable because the throbbing just moves from one side to the other. It’s not even lunchtime and I’m exhausted already.

Lord, you were there and heard when the doctors gave me the diagnosis, and admitted that their pills were only going to trim the burden by a little bit. And I really don’t want to spend my last years of life in a groggy fog of anesthesia so thick that I can’t focus on my companionship with you. But when my pain is this bad – all the time – I don’t know what to do.

Right now I’ll take anything . . . any bit of peace, of release, of heavenly respite you can give me. I trust in your goodness; I know you love me. I know there’s some universal reason why it’s not my turn to get a sparkling, permanent miracle. And that’s okay. But it feels like I’m right at the limit of what I can endure, and that I really need at least some measure of that “way of escape” you’ve promised me.

In Jesus’ name, Amen!

I Am Someone

October 26, 2016 By admin

Dear God: I’m a nobody! I feel like I do not amount to very much. It appears as though whatever I do is insignificant. Nothing of any count! Not many friends – and, yes, at times I feel like a social misfit. I could drop out of existence and no one would know the difference.

But today I read in your word “that you have redeemed me, you have called me by name, I am yours” (Isaiah 43:1). Because of your Son Jesus, I am someone! You gave your all to redeem me. You have put your love inside me. That makes me worth something. That makes me “somebody.”

Thank you, God, for taking me, a nobody, and bringing me into your family –the family of Heaven–and by your compassionate grace giving me value. God, you are wonderful!

In Jesus’ name. Amen!

I’m Sorry

October 26, 2016 By admin

Dear God: I have finally come to realize that cannot make myself sorry for the negative things I say and do. Your word calls for repentance, but I don’t have it within myself to bring it to pass. I can say “I’m sorry,” but that doesn’t mean I really am. I can even act like I’m sorry, but that doesn’t mean I am in my heart.

Only You can give me the gift of true repentance. You will never force me to be sorry against my will–I have to choose it. But repentance is truly a wonderful gift. Without it I’m like an animal stuck in a cage–bound against my will and at the mercy of another. I cannot escape. My only hope is that Someone will come along and release me.

Lord, you have done just that, and I praise You for it! Thank you for the gift of repentance. Thank you for making me thirsty for Your word and giving me an appetite for spiritual things. Now I can say with the Psalmist:

“As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God. I thirst for God, the living God.” –Psalm 42 (NLT)

Use me today to show others how easy it is to be forgiven and cleansed!

In Jesus’ name. Amen!.

Better Sermons, Please

October 26, 2016 By admin

Dear God: I have to open up my heart to you, Lord. Here goes: please bless Pastor with an extra portion of your Spirit regarding sermons. Lately they seem so disorganized, so empty of meat, so uninspiring. And the plain reality going in is that preaching has never been his forte. These past few years we’ve had several families finally drift across town, sighing, “We just do not get fed.”

Father, I know that all of us have gifts and gaps, strong points and weak ones. Please help me to be patient with our pastor’s “journeyman” pulpit abilities and his predictable points. I want to have a patient heart and a searching soul; when there’s an occasional good nugget of truth, please don’t let me miss it because I’m fuming over in the corner.

I’m asking you to also help me simply love this man. He serves us faithfully; he visits his members diligently and he has the most loving heart. That’s worth a lot. I realize that we can feed our souls in other ways besides at 11:30 a.m. Sabbath morning; please lead me toward the spiritual resources that I need.

But to the extent that it’s within your appropriate power, Father, nurture our pastor with new ideas and impassioned convictions. Open up his eyes to the illustrations and the gospel nuggets that sparkle in the universe all around us. Add your miraculous blessing to his dogged commitment, and we’ll say “Amen” as often as we can.

In Jesus’ name, Amen!

Finals

October 26, 2016 By admin

Dear God: I’ve got that massive comprehensive final in 45 minutes, God, and I can’t help the feeling of dread that creeps over me. In this fractured economy, so much is riding on grades these days. If I don’t pull a C, I have to take this class over again – and I lose a whole six months off my goal of getting that job certificate.

With your help, I feel like I’ve done all that a student can do: I took notes, did my homework, and didn’t cut class. But I get confused easily; my Teflon brain loses key ideas. And of course, when I panic, it’s hard enough to remember how to write my name on Page One.

So please, Father, give me a sense of calm, and a sure knowledge of your presence in my life. Win or lose, pass or bomb, score or go belly up, you’re my provider and my counselor. I claim the promise that when I trust in you, all things are possible. You’ve charted my destiny up until this moment, and the results of this exam will be just one more way where you guide me into your perfect future.

Thanks.

In Jesus’ name, Amen!

A Radical Idea

October 26, 2016 By admin

Dear God: The law of heaven calls for a radical way of living that turns human logic on its head. It’s customary for us to love and value those who treat us well. It is easy to embrace people who are kind and considerate. But you want me to love the unlovely, rude, and disrespectful “nuts” who could care less about me or the needs of others. That’s hard to do! In fact, it is impossible! But then, you’re not afraid of impossibile things.

Today, give me the ability to love as you love. Fill my heart with heaven’s light. Teach me that even the “nuts” are your children, which makes them my brothers and sisters.

Change my heart and fill me with your righteousness. Wash away my sins and make me clean.

In Jesus’ name. Amen!

Well Connected

October 26, 2016 By admin

Dear God: I’m pretty connected. After all, I work at my computer all day and sometimes into the night and have full access to e-mail. My Outlook actually makes a beeping sound when I get a new message. And Facebook. What can I say? With that instrument, I’m connected to people all around the world. We share really important things like how glad we are it’s Friday and bad news such as the Cardinals lost. Then there’s my Blackberry. Even when I’m not at my computer, I’m “connected.”

But what about the most important connection? Being connected to my boss and my friends is one thing, but what about the connection to the one who sustains me? (Ephesians 6:18, NLT) is pretty specific: “Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.”

God, make me aware of my need for prayer and also my need to pray for others.

In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Deal or No Deal

October 26, 2016 By admin

Dear God: Sometimes I watch Deal or no Deal on television. People have an opportunity to choose a brief case that may have as much as $1 million in it. It’s a frustrating show because most contestants are greedy and even when they are ensured by the banker of taking home hundreds of thousands of dollars, they keep trying to win more. Sometimes I even shout advice at the television contestants.

If my life were on television and people could see how I grasp at things: a nicer car, more furniture, more clothes, more stuff for my grandchildren, then I’m sure there’d be people shouting at me to stop and consider what I already have.

“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure that was hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again. He was very happy. So he went and sold everything he had. And he bought that field” (Matthew 13:44, NIRV).

In Jesus’ name. Amen.

My Daily Bread

October 26, 2016 By admin

Dear God: I’m truly sorry, Father, that my “bless the food” prayers so often get into a rut. Not just the same words, but probably the same numbing syllable count and even the same hackneyed cadence. “Bless this food to the nourishment of our bodies” – I don’t even know what the grammar of that line implies.

What I want to really do is pause, right now, Lord, and thank you at this moment and in full awareness for this food. The salad with its tangy dressing and the croutons. The rich taste of this corn on the cob. My dinner roll and the exquisite flavor of the strawberry jam Aunt Jean gave us last weekend after church. And especially the blueberry sour cream pie . . . wow.

I know there’s more to my eating this meal than the economic cycle of seeds-crops-trucks-warehouse-bar code-pantry-say grace-eat. Food is here because you created a planet that would miraculously produce it. You give farmers a love for the soil and its productive power. You send the sunshine and the rain and the calcium in the dirt. And now I sit down to savor these very bites, and I want to remember that your goodness is present on my plate.

Lord, you know I love to eat! Thank you!

Prayer helps us identify and acknowledge our gratitude and personal concerns. Written prayers can inspire us to pray in new ways.
