Don’t Eat the Pie

November 28, 2016 By admin

As the wise man said, “Healthy laughter is better than Pepto Bismol” (Proverbs 17:22).

Roger and I were the hosts of an early morning radio show in California’s Napa Valley. Callers regularly bombarded our airwaves with stories that could have been on Comedy Central.

One holiday morning our first caller was the cook from a nearby Board and Care home. She was laughing so hard that she could hardly talk.

“Each year I make a dozen pumpkin pies for our residents and the families who visit,” she finally settled down enough to share. “I made the pies last night, and was really proud of myself for doing such a perfect job! Then, as every good cook must do, I tasted a thin slice, just to be sure they would be a memorable dessert.”

“My mouth was instantly on fire! I drank two glasses of water and one of milk, but nothing took away the flames!”

Now she was laughing so hard it took a minute or two to calm her down enough to describe the disaster.

“In my hurry to get the pies done, I grabbed the wrong container and substituted Cayenne Pepper for cinnamon! In twelve pies!!! And it’s nearly time for dinner!”

We all laughed till our sides hurt, imagining her surprise, and wondering how the guests would have enjoyed the pies.

An hour later the cook arrived at the radio station with one of the pies for us to taste “live.” It was far worse than she had described!

Later in the day, at a very special family holiday dinner, I set the remains of the “pepper pumpkin pie” among the desserts, along with a couple glasses of milk. The guests included cousins Debbie and John who were up from San Francisco…but since John played trumpet in the San Francisco Symphony and had a concert that evening…they had to leave early.

They mistakenly took two giant pieces of the pie with them, having no idea of the surprise to come. We waited, and hoped they had water, milk, and Maalox in the car. When they called, their hysterical laughter was from a pay phone at a Quick-Stop.

“We each took one giant bite of the pumpkin pie,” Debbie gasped, “and immediately discovered that there was no water in the car! It took us nearly ten minutes to find this store, and we’re surprised the car didn’t catch fire!! Whatever you do, don’t eat the pie!!!”

Eat well over the holidays, but watch out for the pumpkin pie!

Vitamin Supplements?

November 16, 2016 By admin

There is an adage that says that if a little is good, more must be better. This saying does not hold true for vitamins, since too much could be unsafe. Many people today are unsure as to whether or not their daily food can supply them with adequate nutrition, and so they take a vitamin pill to provide nutritional insurance.

There are some people that may need additional nutrients to ensure normal body functions and prevent nutrient deficiencies. These include pregnant women; women with excessive menstrual losses; people on severely restricted weight-loss diets; total vegetarians who don’t consume any foods containing Vitamin B12; and those with certain metabolic disorders or who are taking those medications which increase nutrient requirements. There is, however, no evidence that vitamin supplementation has any benefit for the general population that consumes a balanced diet.

Today, there is a lot of interest in natural antioxidants and the protection they afford against cancer, heart disease, and aging. Because of this, some are promoting the regular use of supplements of vitamins A, C, and E. These antioxidants can, however, be amply supplied by foods. Fruits are rich in vitamin C, whole grains and seeds contain high levels of vitamin E, and carrots and broccoli are loaded with vitamin A.

Buyer Beware

Using vitamin supplements can be unsafe. The fat-soluble vitamins A and D are especially toxic. Large doses of B6 for the treatment of PMS or carpal tunnel syndrome have produced permanent nerve damage in some persons. Kidney damage, muscle weakness, diarrhea, irritability, fatigue, undesirable changes in blood lipid levels, headache, nerve damage, and other medical problems may result from the regular use of high-strength vitamin supplements.

In spite of their widespread use, vitamin C supplements do not reduce the incidence of colds. They may, however, slightly reduce the duration of the cold and the severity of the symptoms Such benefits can be seen with as little as 250 mg/day. Higher doses do not provide any extra benefit.

The Good Ole Days

November 9, 2016 By admin

Dear God: When I was raising my kids, it was very different. They didn’t sit and watch television all day. They didn’t have iPods filled with trashy music and computers in their rooms. My children were respectful and dressed appropriately. What’s happening to kids today? I see them at church and I’m embarrassed about what they’re wearing and can’t stand to hear them talk. It can’t be pleasing to you God or to their parents. I’m actually a little afraid of some of them with their weird haircuts and skin-tight clothes.

Only You can help me love and respect them. Help me to pray for them and that my critical spirit will be exchanged with love for each and every one of them no matter what they wear. Give me love for their over-worked parents and if I have an opportunity to reach out and help, show me the window of opportunity.

In Jesus’ name. Amen!
