Party Line

October 19, 2015 By admin

When I was six years old, my parents had a telephone installed in our home for the first time. We resided in a very rural area, so a telephone was a luxury that we had never experienced before. Because private telephone lines were expensive, my parents opted for an option that kept us on the same cable as four other families.

The option was called a “party line,” and it was anything but a party! In order to make a phone call, the line had to be clear of other callers, and there was only one way that we knew of to check; pick up the receiver and listen in. If we heard talking, we simply hung up, waited a few minutes, and checked again.

It was the common practice of many people in those days to listen in on the telephone conversations of other neighbors, and thus learn more about their lives. It started many rumors in our area, and on more than one occasion I can recall a neighbor sharing a juicy tidbit that they had heard on the “party-line” while listening in, and whoever chose to listen, got an “ear full!”

Watch Your Tongue

Party lines are a thing of the past, but sadly, the issue of gossip is not. We have choices to make when it comes to sharing and receiving tales about other’s lives, and the scriptures call us to choose wisely.

“Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking lies” (Psalm 34:13, NIV).

“The gossip of bad people gets them in trouble, the conversation of good people keeps them out of it” (Proverbs 12:13, Message/Remix).

God calls us to choose to speak only good words about others, and when we encounter someone who is trashing another person’s character, motives, or qualities, we have the same option of doing what we did when we were on the party line; “disconnecting” and choosing not to listen. With God’s help, we can maintain a “private line.”

The Good Samaritan

October 19, 2015 By admin

Photo: Kenn Kiser

Stopping to help fellow bikers resulted in double blessings.

In Bible times, the good Samaritan rode a donkey. But today you might find a good Samaritan on a motorcycle. My husband and I belong to Christian Motorcyclists Association (CMA), a ministry to take the gospel of Jesus Christ to bikers. We often have opportunities to witness because we are willing to stop and help one who needs a hand and possibly a prayer.

This past June, my husband and I were coming home from Americade, an upscale motorcycle rally at Lake George, New York. Riding our Honda Shadow ACE Tourer motorcycle, we were trying to stay ahead of a rainstorm that was following us. To beat the storm, we decided not to take country roads but instead take the New York State Thruway and the Massachusetts Turnpike to get to our home in Milford, Massachusetts. We paid the toll, and almost immediately after we entered the thruway, we noticed four stranded motorcyclists beside Gold Wing and BMW motorcycles on the side of the highway. We decided to stop to see whether we could be of assistance.

On this 80-degree day, one man, sweat pouring off his face, was underneath his bike, looking at the tire. We introduced ourselves and asked if we could help. When they saw the CMA vests we were wearing, they asked if we had come from Americade. They were returning to Long Island from the same event and had popped a tire on the BMW while coming through the toll booth.

The situation was frightening because of the heavy truck traffic just a few feet from all of us! The couple with the breakdown seemed to be having trouble deciding what to do. I knew I couldn’t do anything except pray, so I sat on the guardrail and silently prayed that God would intervene. The man who owned the bike got out a patch-repair kit. The Gold Wing owner had an air compressor, so he could check the air pressure. The patch didn’t hold, nor was there enough air pressure in the tire so that he could ride to the nearest exit to Lee, about a five-mile ride off the highway.

Just In Time

In frustration I said, “Where are the cops when you need them?” Then I asked the group if they would mind if we prayed. They seemed shocked but willingly held our hands as my husband prayed for protection and guidance. After we had prayed, one of the women located a BMW dealer only about a 40-minute drive off the highway. Her husband raised his hands toward heaven and said, “Thank You!” He couldn’t believe there was a dealer and that he was open for another 45 minutes. They tried the repair kit again, and this time the plug held! The air pressure was also correct, so we knew God had doubly answered our prayers. We decided to follow the BMW off the highway to make sure they made it safely.

I gave the couples my business card, which includes my email address and information about the book I wrote, Listen to the Cry of the Child. I briefly told them that God helped me come out of the darkness from sexual abuse to recovery. In return, one of the men handed me his business card. I remembered my previous comments when I saw that he is a police officer. I then learned that the other man is a retired police officer.

The experience itself was a blessing, but there was more to come. The very next morning we received an email message from the woman who had been riding the BMW with the tire problem.

She thanked us profusely for taking the time to stop and help them, making sure they were safe, and driving to the next exit. She told us that the BMW dealer had only one tire of the size they needed in stock, “which must have been waiting for us!” They got on the last ferry and made it home by 9:00 P.M. The following day we received a message from her husband. He told us that as police officers, they see so many tragic accidents from both motorcycles and cars on highways and that we had helped prevent another tragic accident! They had been terrified when stranded by the busy highway. When I had lamented, “Where is a cop when you need one?” he had been thinking the very same thing and wishing for the protection of the police and lights. They could not thank us enough!

The next day a beautiful basket of flowers and greenery was delivered to our door from this thankful couple. I was so moved by the emails and flowers and appreciation for our offer to stop and help. We often stop to help someone, but this was the first time we had been thanked with a basket of flowers. Because we had their address, we were able to mail them information about the Long Island Chapter of CMA, along with a Hope for the Highway Bible and recent newspaper articles about CMA.

Centuries ago, a wise man described the principle that CMA members use to share the gospel: “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work: If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up!” (Ecclesiastes 4:9, 10).

A Better Place

October 19, 2015 By admin

The top of Mt. Everest is littered with used oxygen tanks and other unnecessaries that climbing aficionados have unloaded before their final ascent to the top of the world.

Space ships dump human waste, garbage and excess fuel into the deep blackness of the galaxy during missions, sending thousands of pounds of trash swirling in the reaches of the universe.

Endless stretches of Belizean beach are cluttered with aluminum cans, plastic diapers, trash bags and other refuse that come from land and ocean alike, marring the perfection of God’s nature.

Highway volunteers flock to clean up stretches of interstate lined with litter from passing vehicles.

Wherever the human race goes—be it land, water or outer space—we leave a trail of trash behind.

Pack It In, Pack It Out

My husband loves to spend his free hours and days biking, hiking and climbing. He knows the number one rule for enjoying nature: leave it better than you found it. That means not only packing out every iota of waste you might personally bring or create, but also cleaning up where others haven’t been as responsible.

Before plastic bottles and bags of trash, sin made a mess of our perfect earth. Strewing death, destruction and hate in its wake, there was only one way to sweep the planet clean from evil—a one-Man clean up crew.

Jesus ventured to earth to reassemble the wreckage Satan made of the human race, bringing hope to a hopeless people. “For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved” (John 3:17). Better than simply cleansing the earth from sin, God is creating a place better than we can ever imagine. In John 14:2 (b)-3, Jesus comforts his disciples, “ I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also..”

Through his sacrifice, we have future to look forward to. No longer covered in the filth of sin, Christ’s people can shine with the light of his perfect love.

He came to earth and left it better than he found it. And that’s good news for all of us.

Use Your Personality

September 1, 2015 By admin

Photo: iStock

When you look around at other people you readily notice that everyone has a different personality. One person may love to be the center of attention; that person talks a lot, enjoys other people, and has a bubbly personality. Another person seems to be bossy, makes quick correct judgments, and desires to be in control of everything. Another person likes to keep things organized, wants things done correctly, analyzes things, and is always setting goals. Still another person may go to great lengths to avoid a conflict, keep peace. They lack decisiveness and enthusiasm, but have a pleasing personality, and a dry sense of humor. You may fall into one or more of these categories, as I do.

Researchers and scientists devote their whole lives plus millions of dollars trying to figure out how personalities work, where they come from, and predicting what a person will do in a certain situation. They often ask, why are people different and why do people do the things they do? Many theories have been made from these questions. But does it really mean anything?

Why do we all need to be different anyway? Let’s take a look at what the Bible has to say. Paul gives a list of spiritual gifts including wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miraculous powers, prophecy and more (1 Corinthians 12:8-11). Paul then goes on to explain that there are different parts of the church body that require members to do different things (1 Corinthians 12:12-31). God made us different in order to perform the whole workings of the church. One person can’t do everything. But when the people are brought together in the body of the church, all things can be done.

You Are Special

Don’t be discouraged when you see one person doing great things for the Lord that you can never see yourself doing. God made you specifically to do something special. Use what you know you are good at instead of dwelling on what you are not good at. Paul thought of himself as a timid man (2 Corinthians 10:1) and not a good public speaker (2 Corinthians 11:6). Yet the Lord still made him great and used his personality strengths to the fullest.

Growing in Faith

September 1, 2015 By admin

Photo: iStock

Before my car accident this past December I loved to stay busy. I had a full time job plus I had a couple side jobs that I made some money on here and there. I depended on myself to make money, pay the bills, put money away in savings, and have a little extra for spending. My whole world changed when I learned I wouldn’t be able to go back to work until the middle of April. That would mean I would be without a job and income for four months!

The first few weeks were stressful and I was full of anxiety. I didn’t know how I would make it through this. I prayed and prayed and I heard God tell me to trust in him. From then on I knew that God would take care of me and my wife so I didn’t worry about my financial situation any more.

I came to realize that my faith in the Lord was not as strong as it should be and that God allowed me to face a situation where my faith could grow stronger. And my faith has grown tremendously in these last few weeks. God is opening up new doors for me.

Unexpected Wake-Up Call

You may think you are doing things right and walking the way Christians are supposed to walk. Then one day you get a wake up call. It might not be pleasant, but God uses these situations to mold us into stronger Christians.

Jesus had the perfect personality. Though we will never be perfect like Him, we can strive to be like Him. Sometimes we will find ourselves in situations that are out of our comfort zone. But what we do in these situations is what will enable us to become more mature in our Christian walk.

Look to God for guidance in everything you do. Paul tells us that “my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19). Do not despair. You will make it through the hard times and become stronger and more faithful. Keep your trust in Jesus.
